Advantages: At least they tried to make a 3d game
Disadvantages: Just the way the game is, too fast, too useless, too uncontrolable, just poor really
Shadow the hedgehog is Segas attempt to take the sonic games of distant memories into the future, its just a shame they didn't do it right. The only way i can try to describe what they did with this game, is that they tried to do too much at once, they tried to make the game face-paced, have lots of guns, lots of enemies, and a alternate story, depending if you choose good or evil side. Whats worse, is the way that you play the game to uncover your past, but as sega are quite new to 3d games, they made so many errors.
Firstly, the graphics are among the worse i have ever witnessed on the ps2 system. The whole image is just grainy, and too dark, even with the tv on maximum brightness setting.
Secondly, in trying to make the game both fast and weapon loaded, they have made the game virtually unplayable, especially in two player mode, as the characters move way to fast to even give you a chance to aim and shoot, its more of a game where you just wander around, and if by chance you happen to hit an opponent, all the better for you.
Whats more, the whole image that is sonic is destroyed with this game. Don't get me wrong, when this game came out, i felt it was about time sonic entered the third dimension, but not like this! The way you move around in this game is by a kind of skating motion, but its just pathetic, the way that you are either standing still, or moving so quickly that its tricky just to see where you are going, it makes the game unnecessarily hairy, especially when you are trying to get around a tight corner!
Then we come on to the weapons, oh lord! The weapons to me felt that they were just thrown in, in an act of sheer desperation, and the way they work doesn't fit with the game mechanics at all. For example, on most games, you would pick up a rocket launcher to do a large amount of damage to an opponent, but when the life system is "ye olde" rings, on hit from a missile launcher does the same as a hit from a machine gun, so whats the point in having a big impressive missile launcher, that shoots slowly, and is hard to aim, over the basic little gun?
This game to me felt like sega weren't sure as to what they were doing, and tried to do something great, but they failed to realize that just because something is good in another game, e.g. having a missile launcher, does not mean that it suits the type of gameplay of all games. This game is not recommended for anyone, especially you sonic fans. If you want to start hating you favourite game character, then please do buy this game!
Summary: Better off not getting this game, it'll only upset you!
