Disadvantages: too short

Plenty of people have stated that Silent Hill 2 is a truly scary game and you are always wondering whats going to happen well I thought that I would let you know my side of the story. It is claimed that Silent Hill 2 has all the fog to try and give it more atmosphere well not so for me, after owning Silent Hill 1 I was expecting big things from the new release. The first thing I noticed was that it seemed more foggy than the first but it did not create any sort of scary atmosphere for me anyway. personally I felt it was there to more than anything else cover up poor grade graphics. To be honest I thought this game done almost nothing for the power that the PS2 has. It seemed little better than the first.

Anyway you start off in the toilet that ends up in a chase all over Silent Hill in the hope of finding his dead wife. There are only a few puzzles in the game and they are not too taxing to work out which is no doubt why they had a second difficulty settings for the puzzles. I must admit that the plot is quite good but i still thought that the story line was still a bit too close to that in Silent Hill 1. Even the way the game ran, for example in Silent Hill 1 the biggest part of the game was played out in the hospital, in 2 I thought the biggest area was the apartment complex or the hotel but they were both very similar to that of the first. In fact these were the only real large playable levels in the game the rest of the game revolves around running errands to collect things. In the first game as well you traveled to the alternate side of Silent Hill a lot more and that was when you faced most enemies and they were harder to kill but it didn't twist and turn between the two as much in this second version. I much prefered the first version where air raid horns would blare and you would thinks what's coming.

It just seemed to look to me that this game was more like a quickly re-vamped version of Silent hill1 but on PS2. I completed the game
after about eight hours which was also a bit of a let down as it seemed to be all over all to soon. I was left feeling like i was wanting and expecting more from this game. One of the biggest lack for me in this game was the lack of enemies they seemed to be too far and few between and unlike the earlier games there were surprisingly too few boss like encounters and they were too easy to dispatch.

This game is rated with a 15 cert but for me it felt more like it was intended for a younger market that perhaps may have found it a bit scary.

It may be just me but i have found this game lacking in a lot of ways. A lot was expected from this title but I found little reward delivered in return. I have only even bothered to complete this game twice and it,s sitting gathering dust in one of the bedroom drawers. Just take a look at Konami's page for Silent Hill 2

Ask yourself one question when big or decent games have a webpage there are normally more than a single page devoted to the page and if you are lucky maybe a couple of hundred words. You would think that they would have more to say over their product. Well it's up to you to make up your own minds all I would wish that anyone done who read this was to try and pick it up second hand rather than new. It may pay off in the end if you felt a bit let down by a so called major PS2 title. I felt that this game was more like a lesuirly stroll down a country lane rather than a sweatbreaking heart pumping horror game that it is categorised as. I now understand why this game was rather played down a bit on the reviews with little given away as there was little to be heard about it till it came out.

I've never disagreed more with an opinion! This is the scariest game I have ever played by some distance. May I suggest you play the game on Hard setting? The monsters are far more numerous and strategy becomes more integral to the game. But it's not really the monsters that create the fear element. Unlike the now childish Res Evil series, which focuses on gore and sudden shocks, the fear factor here is on a far more cerebral level. The sounds, the volumetric fog (the fog is used to far cleverer effect than the first game), the story - everything plays out like a bad trip. I think many younger gamers just don't 'get' this game.

Still, I rated it VU because at least you try and justify your points.
