Advantages: More freedom than I expected

Disadvantages: Very simplistic

Games that adapt licenses so often wind up as very pale iterations that don't do their fans nor the product itself a great service. The Simpsons: Hit and Run, however, is a very fun game if you're a fan of the show, although if you've somehow never seen The Simpsons, I can't imagine this being much fun for you, as it has a lot of in-jokes. Still, you'd have to be a feral child to have never seen The Simpsons, and I don't know anyone who doesn't like the show, so it should be fine!

Unlike the previous Simpsons games, this is actually in 3D, and is a driving game styled on the Crazy Taxi engine. You start out as Homer (and can later play as other Simpsons), as you are tasked with driving around Spingfield, performing numerous tasks within the time limit whilst not colliding with other cars and environmental obstructions. Some of the missions also require that you total the vehicle of an enemy, and whilst this isn't the deepest game in the world, it does make considerations towards the speed, size and weight of your vehicle, with each car having its benefits and drawbacks that you can decide depending on your own driving style.

What surprised me was that you're actually able to get out of your car among other things (something you could never do in Crazy Taxi!), and there is a surprising level of freedom for a game that I assumed would be a mostly soulless cash in. There's quite a bit to do in the various challenge modes, and although it's hardly a difficult game, it is a fun diversion for a few hours. I didn't buy it at full price when it came out, but it's at least worth a rent, or the more likely option now of bagging it for a couple of quid on E-Bay. If you're a Simpsons fan and want something that you can just relax and play, then this is the one to go for!

Summary: Simple but fun
