Advantages: Fun game with friends

Disadvantages: Easy to cheat

In the early versions of the Singstar games there was a slight problem in the range of tracks offered as they tried to please as wide of an audience as possible and hence the range of songs meant that there were always a few that you did not like or were damn near impossible to sing such was the high pitch required. Recent versions of the game have tended to focus on one particular genre and this means that those who enjoy the games can pick the version that most closely matches their personal musical tastes. Popworld lands in the former bracket rather than the latter, it has a wide range of songs from a quite diverse listing some of whom I did not recognise from the track listing.

I have long been a fan of this series of games as they are an ideal time to get a few friends around, open a bottle of wine or three and belt out a few songs not really caring how bad you sound.

For those new to this format of game the objective is to sing along and match the tone and length of the notes being performed, the closer the match the higher the score you achieve. There are a number of different formats that you can play whether singing solo, a duet mode or in a group.

It should be noted that as with all games in this series you can actually achieve a high score without getting the words right indeed all you have to do is hum along to the right length of note and pitch and you will rack up the points however this is not ideal preparation for Pop Idol and in my opinion defeats the whole point of the game. It has long been a weakness of the game and something that you just have to accept and rly on peer pressure for those who try to cheat.

This particular offering has a pretty good range of songs to choose from, my personal favourites include the quite excellent Tom Jones classic Its not Unusual as well as a couple of songs which are excellent in a group from Girls Aloud and Black Eyed Peas although the range required from the latter song makes it quite difficult. It is not all fluffy pop though with contributions from Blink 182, The Clash and the Dandy Warhols.

The sound quality on the game is of the usual standard which is high for those new to the game and the original artists feature on the game as well as providing the videos for their songs so that you can better capture the mood of the song.

This is a good game although for some the wide range of the 30 songs may not make it as attractive as some of the later versions such as Rock or 80’s which are the ones I prefer.

Available at Amazon for £34.98 if you want the two microphones to be able to play the game or £14.98 for the game alone if you already have the mics.

Summary: Singing game with a wide range of songs
