Singstar PopWorld:
A couple of Christmases ago I got a pink PS2 which came with a Singstar game, (Pop World), and the microphones. To be honest at the time I just wanted the pink PS2 and I didn't think I would play Singstar really but now I love playing Singstar and I have about five different ones. (Because this is the Singstar edition I got with the mics etc I will cover the mics and adapter in this review).
Singstar is a game for the PS2, (they do some for the PS3 now as well). You need the microphones as well and the USB adapter so you can attach them to the PS2 via one of the USB ports on the front of the console.
The aim of the game is to sing-along and try to match the pitch of the original recording which plays along at the same time. You will quickly discover that Singstar is not about sounding good and in fact to get a good score you will sound rather awful and funny at times which is all part of the fun
I must admit that every time I have seen some-one have their first go they are always really reluctant to give it a go but they have all ended buying a Singstar game themselves.
The USB connector is really cool as it will work in your PC, (you will need some kind of software to make them work), and it has standard 3.5ml jack sockets, (on things like amps etc).
The microphones are really good quality and very heavy. The only mics I have found of comparable quality cost a minimum of £15.00 each. Each mic is colour coded, (you get one with red trim and one with blue trim), and they plug into the corresponding coloured socket on the USB adapter. The mics pick up sound really well without picking up too much background noise. They feel good in your hand as well which adds to the whole rock star feel. (You can set the volume for the mics using the PS2 controller).
As with most of the Singstar editions, (there are loads like 80s, 90s, legends etc), there are good and bad songs. Now while you might not choose to listen to the rubbish ones normally it can be quite funny to have a go at singing them and even funnier to watch some one else do them!
There are 30 songs on the PopWorld edition such as Beyonce - Crazy in Love, The Clash - Should I Stay or Should I Go and Blink 182 - What's my Age Again. As the name suggests the songs on this edition are mainly Pop songs making this one of my least favourite editions of Singstar. The mix is reasonably good and if you are a Pop fan then you would probably love this. I have to admit watching men sing along with Beyonce is one of the funniest sights you will ever see!
There are several modes to keep you entertained including solo acts, duets, battles, (where 2 people sing the same song and compete for points), and freestyle where you are not scored at all.
All the songs are accompanied by the original videos, (if the song had one in the first place), and you will get colour-coded lyrics and bars across the screen showing if you are matching the pitch or not.
There are 3 difficulty settings but generally we only use the easy setting as it's hard enough for us!
You can pick this edition up with the mics and adapter from Amazon for £33.03 new and £19.94 used. Without the mics for £8.85 new and £7.99 used and just the mics and adapter for £13.49 new and £9.99 used.
I would defiantly recommend this game to anyone. As I mentioned earlier everyone I have introduced this to has gone on to get their own copy!
Summary: A cool "kareoke" style game.
