Advantages: fun, social, entertaining, varied

Disadvantages: not that good on solo and gets stale after a while

SingStar was in effect the start of the musical instrument based games, with Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Lips following in its path which will continue forever more as long as people with no music ability still like to kid themselves by playing to a digital crowd. Lets face it, its an advanced version of the air guitar! but still a hell of a lot of fun can be had with these type of games.

SingStar: Rocks is one of the many singstar games available, from Pop to 'Legends' there's plenty out there. This one has classic rock in the form of The Rolling Stones, Queen, Thin Lizzy & The Scorpions amongst others. These are lovingly placed with some more modern indie rock by Maximo Park and Bloc Party. Throw in a bit of Jet and Hard-Fi and you'll have the begininngs of the gist of the diversity of this game. 30 tracks which are nice and varied and offers something for everyone, young and old, male and female, tone deaf and singing legend.

The game requires one (or for duets or other multiplayer modes), two mics which can be bought with the game. As a solo singer the game may seem a little limited with the aim being purely to sing as close to the real version as possible, with your notes being tracked on the screen in blue or pink bars. At the end of the track you are rated on your performance and a table of high scores will track your ability.

Multiplayer modes:-

Pass The Mic - sing a bit, pass it on - nice for groups of people

Duet - sing with a friend, some bits of the song will be for each of you and some will be for both

Battle - battle with someone, best singer wins essentially

Overall:-

The game from a solo point of view has limited playbackability though the music videos in the background do make the game more interesting but it is essentially a game meant for two really. Playing this the other night it really came into its own when people were taking it in turns and laughing at how people were singing etc.

A great social game perfect for parties!

Note: the ps3 version offers downloadable extra songs adding to the game even more!

Summary: A great social game perfect for parties!
