Video Game Review: Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racoonus (PS2)
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racoonus Is about a racoon named Sly, who is descended from a long line of master thieves, the Coopers. When Sly was a little racoon, a band of thieves known as the Fiendish Five Stole the family's ancient book of thieving secrets-the Thievius Racoonus. They divided it up between themselves and split up. Sly grew up in an orphanage because of these guys, so when he grew up, he set out with his two best friends from the orphanage-the brainy Bently and the ever loyal Murray-to destroy the Fiendish Five and take back every last page of the Thievius Racoonus.
The graphics of this game are very cartoonish, but that works perfectly with this game. Cartoonish graphics are never the best, but the graphics of Sly Cooper and the Thievius racoonus are much better than the graphics of many other cartoonish games from the same time (2002). Sly, and everything else that moves against the background, looks like he was cut-and-pasted to the background, especially when he has been hit. But this cut-and-paste look isn't as bad as some other games that I have played in the past. Many breakable items that are sitting around don't have this look, which could make it difficult to find things to break to get coins (100 coins equals a silver horseshoe, which gets you one hit, two silver horseshoes gets you a gold one, and each horseshoe that you get when you have a gold one gets you an extra life).
The gameplay of Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racoonus is simple, yet fun. Sly can do all of the usual moves (jump, hit, etc.), but he also has a few special moves, like invisibility, rolling, slowing down and speeding up time, and throwing bombs and decoys, just to name a few. You can only get these special moves by finding pages of the Thievius Racoonus, which tell you how to do these moves. That pretty much sums up the gameplay. Even the bosses are simple, like those of the earlier Spyro games. Not a particularly hard game to play, but then it was made with younger gamers in mind. Despite the simplicity, I had difficulty getting around a few areas, which made the game funner because it wasn't too easy. If it was too easy, it would have become boring for me.
The sounds of Sly Cooper were guady, nothing was subtle, even the sounds of sneaking. I had to keep the game at a lower setting than most of my other games, because it was loud enough to disturb my fiancee when sleeping, and he sleeps like a rock.
This is one game that, despite it's simplicity, is quite good. I understand why annimator magazine said that Sly is "So good, it's just plain criminal" and why the academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences named Sly Cooper the Game Character of the Year, 2002, But i don't see why they had to stick these on the back cover of the game like it was a paperback novel.
I received Sly Cooper through the trading site, Goozex after it was recommended to me through Yahoo Answers. I'm glad I got it. Overall, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racoonus is a good game that I recommend for all gamers, but especially those under 12. Sly gets 4 stars.
Summary: a great game for littler kids, very imaginative
