Advantages: Great Graphics, Great Options.

Disadvantages: Multiplayer a little weak.

I bought a playstation 2 after the Christmas hype, it cost me £300 which was very expensive for a student so I said to myself I had to make it worth the while. I knew games were expensive so I told myself I would only get the best games.

When I visited my local Woolworths store they didn’t have much to offer apart from fifa 2001, SSX, tekken, and a few other car games. Not a big fan of car games and already having fifa on my pc I went for SSX.

I have never really thought of buying a snowboarding game before, as it is something I am not very familiar with. Plus when I bought my playstation I would of said “probably not” to anyone who asked me if I was to buy a snowboarding game.

I have now had the game for a few months. I have 7 games in total. SSX is my favourite game out of the lot! X – squad comes a near second, with timesplitters my third favourite game. Why is SSX so good?

The game itself is extremely quick and slick, it is great fun in multiplayer, and has some fantastic options linked to awesome graphics and snowboarding reality.

The game itself – Basically the game consists of I think its 7 courses with an untracked one too. There are 8 players you can be but you have to unlock 4 along the way. It has the option of two-player multiplayer. You can either race, show off your great tricks, train or simply freestyle and cruise down the mountaintop. Either start a season or simply practice with races and showoffs.

The courses – When you first start the game there are only two courses, which you can play, snowdream – a basic simple course to start and practice on, and Elysium Alps – a really quick fast furious course with many hurdles!!!!!!! To unlock the next course you must come third or higher in a race on either course. To open the next course you must come third or higher on the course you had previously unlocked and so on….

World Circuit
– Choose one of the four players available at the start. You can race, show off or train. As you complete courses when you select race you earn experience point to increase your player’s stats you also unlock different boards for the players. Also when you select show off and complete the courses coming third or higher by doing tricks to gain points you also gain experience points and unlock another board for each player.

Practice – when you practice you basically race, showoff or train (only on a practice course) on the courses you have unlocked. You can also change your board if you have unlocked them!!!! You can also play with a partner!!!

Multiplayer – this game is only for one or two players. You can only race or showoff against another person in practice and not world circuit. The multiplayer however is still great fun and is a real challenge it is a superb aspect of this game it is really addictive.

Graphics – The graphics for this game are unreal. The detail, which has gone into the courses, is incredible, even when you go off the well-marked track the graphics are awesome. You really do believe that the crowd is really there!! There isn’t really any thing more to say about the graphics except they are all you would expect from the ps2.

Controls – The controls are really easy to use, simply hold down for speed burst X when you want to jump the other controls control the trick you want to do when you are in the air e.g. R1 is a board hold and so on…

The Players – you only start with four players because you must unlock them as you go along which is a great challenge. You can build up you player’s stats as you go through world circuit. You also have many different boards, which must be unlocked. There are also a number of uniforms each player has, which must be unlocked via the trick book.

Trick book – this is a picture gallery of all
the tricks you can do and how to do them. You know which ones you have done, as they are the ones in colour the others are in black and white. This is a difficult option the tricks can only be unlocked in career mode.

Race – race against five competitors to the finish and save your record times

Show off – try as many tricks as possible to gain points but make sure the clock doesn’t beat you get to those checkpoints!!!

Overall I would say this game has a high addiction factor and is a really good option to all playstion2 owners. The disadvantages to this game I think is that maybe they could have made it 4 players and not only 2. I also believe that the amount of points you must get for gold in show off is a bit high but extremely challenging which may be a good thing to some people.

I give this game 95% and would recommend it to a friend.
