Spartan Total Warrior is an action game developed by Sega for the Playstation 2.

The story follows a Spartan warrior who is fighting against the armies of Rome to defend his homeland, the Gods are on your side however and Ares promises to aid you in your struggle against the Roman army. The story takes many twists and turns and has you facing off against many mythical creatures it is actually a pretty engaging tale and I played through eager to find out what happened next.

The game has changed completely from the series roots of a strategy game on the PC. Instead of commanding massive armies you control a single Spartan, the gameplay is a hack and slash affair and it is really satisfying as the hits you land feel brutal.

You can perform a variety of moves a quicker attack or a more powerful attack that may hit multiple foes, you can also charge your weapons with magical powers if you have enough mana as you play you can unlock new and more powerful weapons to equip your Spartan with and each has its own strengths and weaknesses usually its a trade off between strength of the attack and speed. You can also enter rage mode where your character is momentarily enraged and your attacks will do far more damage.

In addition to the storyline there is an arena mode where you can face off against waves on enemies with some Spartan allies to aid you, this is really quite fun as it is like the ancient coliseum battles that took place.

Graphics are pretty also of a good standard often depicting battles with dozens of soldiers on screen at once impressive for the Playstation 2.

As a first attempt at a Total Warrior hack and slash the game is
exceptionally good and if battling mythical creatures appeals to you check it out.
