Advantages: Gameplay

Disadvantages: Not very sophisticated

Star Wars Battlefront reminds me a lot of the superb FPS game Battlefield 1942 - it operates on the same principle of a war of attrition in which there is little storyline, and it just involves you going to various locations and destroying the enemy until they have no units left. The only difference? It's in space and the models and designs are obviously taken from the Star Wars universe.

Galactic Conquest mode is indeed what makes this such a delight to play - you initially pick either the Rebel Alliance, Galactic Empire, CIS or Clone army, then pick a unit and you're off! Each force is balanced with its own advantages and disadvantages, and there are numerous types of soldiers to pick also, from simple Infantry men with machine guns, to super soldiers who have rocket launchers. Also, you can use vehicles to decimate your foes.

It's a very simple premise but also a very entertaining one - the game doesn't offer much in the way of a challenge, but for Star Wars nerds who've always wanted to recreate their favourite battles from the films, this is an unmistkably vital piece of software. You have troops, and so do the enemies, but much like BF1942, thyere are control points across the map that you can capture to aid with your assault - the more you hold, the more your enemy's units will deplete and so on. Considering this was released at a midway point in the PS2's developmental cycle, the visual effects are rather impressive indeed, particularly the manner with which they have brought this battle to life, with many, many units being on the screen at once, alongside large vehicles and numerous particle effects.

It may not offer much in way of plot or a challenge, but it's a damn fun game that's stunning to play with a few mates and a bunch of beer. This is a great game.

Summary: Style over substance, but what style!
