Star Wars: Battlefront (PS2)
Advantages: Very very cool
Star wars battlefront is a 3rd or first person (depending on what camera angle you choose) shooter game based in the star wars series. In this game, you can play as 1 of 4 factions (plus a few others in the extra game modes, more on these later).
Either fight for the rebel alliance vs the evil empire. The rebels special units are battle hardened wookies and infiltrators, spies who can cloak themselves and burn enemies from behind!
Fight for empire vs the rebels, special units being jump pack soliders with electrical discharges and bespen officers able to lead their comrades into battle.
Fight for the droid army, with special units destroyer droid armed with sheilds and about 100 laser cannons, or with the guard bots, with terrifying grenade launches.
Finally fight for the clones vs the droids with the jet pack solider (similar to the empire one), or with the commander, armed with a solider mounted chain machinegun!
Each faction also has a standard infantry, sniper, engineer, anti-tank and hero as well (hero is normally one of the jedi's for the forces of good, or one of the sith for forces of bad, the choice depends on the map level).
Anyway, the objective of the game is to capture bases, and kill opponents, with a variety of vehicles to enter. This game is really awesome as it can feel like you are in a full on battle on some maps. There is also a story mode to follow, and a campaign mode for each faction which can be quite fun.
Another mode is space battle mode, which was my favourite. Each faction starts off with 1 main ship, and depending on the options specced and map size, 0-2 cruisers. The aim is to score points by either killing enemies, shooting down enemy fighters, destroying cruisers, or destroying the main ships shields, radar, cannon, engines, weapon system and hull (each scoring a set amount of points). In order to do this you have 4 spacecraft to choose from, and 2 solider classes. Play as pilots with their inferior handgun, but the ability to heal any spacecraft they command over time. or go with the space marines armed with rifles and missile launchers, but sadly are not as adept with flying spacecraft.
Then choose either the fighter, an all round ship, the bomber, heavy army, heavy payload specific vs enemy ships/cruisers, but slow and vulnerable. The landing ship, able to carry men and a spawn point onto the enemy ship to allow a raid (in the raid you can plant bombs on things like the central computer core of the ship to deactivate weapons etc), or the intercept, light heavy damage output craft but with low armour are best suited for shooting down enemy attackers rather than mounting an assault on enemy ships (as enemy ships weapons systems will destroy interceptors pretty easily if your not careful). I just love this mode, no other game does anything like this to my knowledge!
Each faction has different ships, all seen in the star wars films, and each factions ships are slightly different. For example the rebel Y wing bomber can seat a driver and a secondary gunner unique to the rebel class. Also you can do jump twirls etc to get away from missiles that lock on to you. Its all very good fun.
Other game modes some strange games, such as hunt mode, where you get to choose other weird factions, like the gungans vs droids, and so on. These are more like minigames, and i wont mention much about them as they are more something to do when you want a change. Other modes include clones vs geonosians, and various others, again all based on the films.
2 final modes i want to discuss quickly, there is a level (i forget which), which you can play a special hero mode, where everyone gets to play a hero. This mode is fun, as you have darth maul fighting off quin on and so on. its awesome fun.
Finally there is a online multiplayer. I just mention that here at the end as i have never played it as i did not have the cable needed to play ps2 online.
In summary, this is a very good game, a must have for all shooter and star wars fans out there.
