Star Wars Starfighter is one of the latest bunch of games to be rereleased on Sony?s new Platinum range for the PS2. The Platinum games are reissues of popular games at a reduced price of £19.99. I had been previously put off by the 40 pound price tag of the game so when I saw it as part of the budget range I jumped at the chance to buy it.

The game follows loosely the plot of The Phantom Menace. Rather than following exactly the plot of the Episode 1 movie the game weaves around it by using characters not seen in the film.

You control different characters according to the mission. I personally would have preferred the use of just one character, or maybe several but with less jumping around between them, to build up more of a sense of continuity in the story.

At the start of each mission you are set various tasks which you must complete to progress. Fulfilling further tasks allows you access to bonus missions. Between the missions you are treated to cut scenes to further enhance the tale. Whilst these aren?t up to the standard of Metal Gear Solid 2, they certainly do a good job.

The game itself is a simple arcade style flying & shooting game. There is some degree of freedom in being able to fly around but this is restricted by the linear plot & time limits.

The graphics are good but not of the standard of the very latest PS2 games. The music & sound effects are the major strong points of the game ? they really add to the experience especially in the most frantic moments.

Overall I think that it is a decent game &, whilst not having the longest lifespan & most challenging gameplay, it is good fun for an stress relieving occasional blast.
