Advantages: Addiction, multiplayer and graphics
Disadvantages: Some modes are the same
Tekken was probably the first game produced for the Playstation 2. It was advertised and was due to sell well. Having bought my PS2 I didn’t really plan to buy it. I would probably end up getting a fighting game, but I wasn’t sure. I was told by a mate not to buy the game but my brother however had already bought it. I have played the game a lot since it was purchased and have to admit the game is truly awesome. With so many fighting options available I believe that this is the best fighting game out at the moment. The game itself doesn’t have any particular storyline, but as you complete the arcade option with different characters you unlock their videos and unlock secret fighters. The game has many options including, arcade, time attack, survival, vs battle, 1 on 1, 1 on 1 vs, team battle, practice and pair play mode. With all these options the game must be rated as on of the best. My favourite has to be the original arcade, you can either play in pairs in the impressive multiplayer or go it alone. Pick two players of your choice and battle through 8 gruelling stages fighting the best tekken has to offer. To switch players while fighting simply hit and of the R or L buttons and the characters change quickly. This is really great as you can change players quickly and effectively. Time attack mode is simply competing against the clock, until you complete every stage. This mode is great fun and is seriously competitive, you cannot pause the game, which makes it fast and furious and much fun. Survival mode, fight against as many computer-controlled players as possible until your health bar runs out. This is a very difficult test. It is also a lot of fun, and extremely exciting. It keeps you playing for hours. Vs battle mode, this is when two or more players battle against each other sequentially. You can change your fighter when the battles are over. This option is really cool when you are playing with lot
s of mates, it is tough but is addictive and loads of fun. 1on 1 is simply what it says. It is the basic option with all fighting games. It is still good fun but the other options are much better, either fight against a friend with 1 player or against the computer. Practice is simply fighting with two players against stationairy opponents. This is great for practices moves but that’s all. The other three options are all pretty much the same. They are all superb multiplayer games, which are really enjoyable. Multiplayer is the best option on this game. It is highly addictive and produces barrels of laughs playing. Having completed arcade several times you unlock certain characters. One to be unlocked is ogre. Once he is unlocked then your options menu is complete. Tekken bowling will appear, an odd inclusion to the game you get a chance knock over some skittles in this funny and interesting game. It is a laugh when played in pairs, very addictive and downright annoying when you can never knock over the last skittle!!! Still, it is a great feature to this fabulous game. Each player on the game has its own area to fight. Each one packed with detail and provides an excellent background to the tough fights. Each area has super detail, which makes the game extremely realistic and adds to the games great layout. There are 20 characters in total each with unreal signature moves, which can destroy your opponent. 20 characters equals 20 zones so there is a lot of variety in there as well. Each fighter has his/her own style, which makes him or her unique. My favourite character is Hwoarang or Baek, however I think Yoshimitsu is the best with his powerful sword. The characters, Jin Kazama – Jin is from japan, he is 19 and a karate expert. Jin is quick and a great fighter, he has great moves which when executed your opponents have no chance Paul Phoenix – Paul is an experienced fighter, at the a
ge of 46 he is probably past it. His skills are judo based martial art. He is a good overall fighter. Forest Law – Law has been on it since the beginning, he is extremely quick and agile, and his moves are some of the hardest to defend against. He is form the USA and is 25. Lei Wulong – Lei is from China he is 45, he is skilled in many forms of martial arts. He has a really sad ponytail, but is still another quick fighter There are six women on the game who I never play with, having fort against them however, I have realised that they are fast and very agile, you better watch out they are seriously good. In this Tekken game there are two kings, King and Armour King. King is from Mexico, and is 28, no one knows how old or where Armour King is from. They both have wrestling styles, they aren’t particularly quick, but when a move is done properly you opponent takes a serious battering. Gunjack – Gunjack is very slow but when his moves are executed your opponent is left pretty much dead. I don’t really like Gunjack as he is terribly slow. He is only 7, and no one knows where he comes from, he is a real power fighter. Yoshumitsu – one of my favourite characters who specialises in ninja arts. He has an unstoppable sword, which can defeat opponents in seconds, he is a really superb fighter, from Japan originally. Hwoarang – Howoarang is like lighting he is extremely quick and has dazzling combos, he is from Korea, and is 19, he is trained in tae kwon do. Eddy – Eddy has probably the best combo’s and is probably the most exciting fighter, using his break-dancing skills to annoy and destruct opponents, he is from Brazil, is 27 and has a capoeira fighting style. Baek- also from Korea, Baek is also extremely quick with great combos, he is an exciting fighter, trained in tae kwon do and is 27 years old. Ganryu – A big sumo wrestler with enormous power yet, with no speed or flexib
ility. He is from Japan and is 34. Bryan – he has the most powerful kicks, he is a great fighter from America, he is trained in kickboxing and is 29. Heihachi - Heihachi, is the last fighter you have to battle. He isn’t that tough, he isn’t that fast but does has some good moves. He is 73 and I think from Japan, he is trained in mishima style karate. One of the best things about this game that will keep you playing for hours is the fact that there are, 14 characters to be unlocked, this soon allows you a fantastic selection of characters for the other options. Multiplayer for Tekken is absolutely phenomenal. You can have up to 8 players when you have two multitaps, and 8 controllers. Multiplayer for Tekken I think is the best for any game anywhere. Even when you have four player you can play 2 v 2, which is so much fun. It is a great laugh when you are playing with mates. It can get a little annoying when you are trying to execute a signiture, and your best mate is simply button bashing. However the multiplayer is still totally awesome. The controls for this game are easy to use. It is quite hard to unleash a super move which adds to the realism. The buttons are simply; the directional buttons move your character, up being jump and down being crouch. Square is left punch, triangle is right punch, left kick is X and right kick is circle. These buttons are great as it is easy to perform combos. Any of the L or R buttons change the character. The graphics for every Tekken have been great, but the graphics for Tekken on the PS2 are totally brilliant. The detail given into each character is superb. You can even see the muscles on some character. The detail and graphics for the zones is also fantastic. Combining the great character details with the zone details makes tekken one of the most realistic games about. Overall I think that the game is totally unreal and should be purchased by any PS2 owner
. It makes the other fighting games like DOA on the PS2, and Soul Calibur on the dreamcast look really poor. The great things about this game are the awesome graphics, and multiplayer. The only downside is the fact that most of the modes are very similar. With tekken bowling being including this gives great variety to this fantastic game. I would definitely recommend it to a friend and give it a great 95%

- 22/02/01 Beat me to it Dan, but at least Namco did both titles.
I must agree though, Soul Calibur is a truly fantastic game and I am concerned that you may be a bit of a die-hard Playstation fan and have not taken time to appreciate it's beauty.
You are young though and you will learn..... |
