Advantages: Good story, challenging puzzles, good atmosphere
Disadvantages: Poor gameplay
The Da Vinci Code is a mystery game for the Playstation 2 published by 2K Games in 2006. It is loosely based upon the novel of the same name by Dan Brown and is unconnected with the film adaptation. You play the role of Robert Langdon, a Harvard Professor of Symbology who is brought by the police to the body of Jacques Sauniere, as his expertise is needed to solve the mystery of the strange symbols at the crime scene. When Langdon encounters Sauniere's granddaughter, Sophie Neveu, this sets off a trail of events in which an even greater mystery is discovered, and they soon realise they are in grave danger.
YThose expecting a faithful adaptation of Brown's novel may be disappointed, since the plot of the game is based on that of the book but there are many missions which do not feature in the novel. The missions in the game range from puzzle solving levels to stealth missions and the occasional chase level. The storyline is interesting but not as good as the novel, since the game adds extra plot points which make it seem drawn out and a bit rambling. The highlights of the game for me were the atmosphere creating by the settings and the music which fit perfectly with the mystery storyline, and also the puzzles are very challenging and well made. The graphics are pretty good with a great deal of intricate detail, and there is quite a variety of locations from museums and churches to mansions and city streets. The main drawback for me was the gameplay. The movement of the character's is quite clunky and awkward, and the combat is awful. It's not an action game so you don't use weapons, but sometimes you are required to fight with an enemy, and instead of having controls for fighting, you have to follow on-screen instructions, pressing certain buttons at the right time. This is a really annoying feature which gets very tedious.
Overall the game is an entertaining one with some good puzzles and a great, suspenseful atmosphere. It is let down by some aspects of the gameplay, however it is definitely worth a play and will keep you interested til the end.
Summary: An entertaining mystery game but let down by the gameplay
