The getaway is the 2002 game developed by team SOHO
The getaway is made in the same format as the grand theft auto games. Basically allowing you to 'free roam' as often as you like. You play an ex gangster, Mark Hammond. After retiring from a life of crime, Hammond has settled down with his wife and kids, only to find that one day his wife has been murdered, and his son has been taken hostage by the leader of a rival gang, Charlie Jolson.
The only way to get your son back alive is to undertake jobs for the guy who has kidnapped your son. He sends you on missions to wipe out his competition over the city.
The second half of the game comprises of you assuming the role of a police officer. This story runs parallel to the story you play with Hammond, but meets up at the last mission when you must rescue your son on Charlie Jolson's boat. Concluding in an explosive ending.
I must say, I really enjoyed this game. I picked it up for a fiver at a car boot sale, so my expectations were not high, but I delivered addictive and challenging game play on many fronts. The graphics are Ok, and the sounds aren't too bad either. The storyline though is the best part of this game. The plot is well written and its use of cinematic cut scenes gives it an almost 'Movie' type feel, which works well in this game. There are a wide variety of weapons, which all look and sound realistic. Some of the missions are very challenging, but in a good way as it gives you a certain amount of satisfaction when completed. The cars drive alright, but they do tend to skid a little more than in other games such as GTA. An impressive fact is that all the cars are real, containing real manufacturers like Citroen and Mercedes. The way that there are two different view points of the story also gives the game some depth. On the one hand you get to play as a father trying to rescue his son, and on the other you get to play as a police officer trying to takedown the most notorious gang in London.
A good game with good graphics, good audio work and a great storyline. Just think GTA in London, but with less missions. Worth a look
Cockney gangster time in the style of the Getaway, based in London this game is pretty much made in the same veign as Grand Theft Auto was, basically you play a one time crook who has his wife and kids stolen but has to go back to his gangster ways to get them back . You can play this game either as the villain or the cop which is a nice touch as they're two completley different plot lines.
Graphics - Yeah the graphics are really good, in fact they've recreated 40 Kilometers of old London town for you to drive through on your missions and it all looks very detailed and very good. The characters all look cool to and the animations as you run jump and kill people are all well done
Gameplay - Good, not perfect but it's very playable, the cars aren't as fun to manouver as GTA but the on foot stuff is better. One thing thats annoying is intead of having a check point to head to you have to follow the cars signals which is pretty frustrating.
Sound - Cockney acting and all ver Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells. But even though it's silly its well voiced and quite witty.
Overall - It's a great action game with a decent involving story and enough things going on to keep you busy. I intend on going back and completing it again as it has a great feel to the game.
