Advantages: Good car handling, fun free roam, decent plot
Disadvantages: Some frustrating bits, bland graphics
The Italian Job is a driving game developed by Eidos for the Playstation 2.
The game follows the plotline of the new Italian Job movie which involves Charlie Croker and his crew as they plan a heist in Los Angeles to steal bunch of gold from a mansion and escape with it, the game actually has nothing to do with Italy the only reason it shares the same title is because it was inspired by the Michael Caine classic. The storyline is fairly decent and represents movie well.
The gameplay puts you in control of several cars, though it is usually the (new) Mini Cooper. The games missions usually involve you collecting items and driving around in your car or rushing around as you evade capture but there are side activities to do which consist of some fairly entertaining races and challenges to do.
The car handling is very forgiving you can drive as fast as you like with little need to reach for the brakes and it is easy to drift around corners and even go up on two wheels at points! Unfortunately you can flip your car over and it can be frustrating because the game will not turn you back the other way so if that happens you have effectively lost and have to retry.
My favourite mode was actually the free roaming mode the game has where you can just drive around the city with no pressure to do anything, there is not much to do but drive and have fun but there is something very enjoyable about flicking your Mini round corners and whizzing down the streets at high speeds.
The game has a clean but bland style but atleast the Minis look good, it won't wow you but it is an early Playstation 2 game so can be forgiven.
The Italian Job is a pretty fun driving game and will provide some good light hearted fun.
Summary: A decent driving game.
