Advantages: Good story, three playable characters
Disadvantages: Combat is lacking in moves, some annoying bits, always looking for items
The Lord of The Rings The Fellowship of The Ring is an adventure game developed by Surreal for the Playstation 2.
The games story takes place at the start of the Fellowship of the Ring book and follows that story, Bilbo has decided to leave the Ring of Power to Frodo so he must start his journey through Middle Earth to the land of Mordor where he can dispose of the ring.
Along the way he will have help from his companions the Fellowship of the Ring. The story is told well in the game and even includes characters that didn't get into the movies like Tom Bombadil.
The game has three playable characters, Frodo, Aragorn and Gandalf the Grey. Each character controls differently and has their own special abilities. Frodo can turn invisible by using the ring and lob stones to distract enemies, Aragorn has a powerful sword and bow and is by far the most powerful hero, Gandalf can use his staff to use magic spells and attack with his sword.
The gameplay is less satisfying than you would want, especially during combat. There are only a few basic combos to use and they don't look that impressive, you are always constantly on the hunt for recovery items such as cram and lembas bread as your characters seem to take alot of damage. There are also annoying sequences in the game that have you explore environments to figure out where to go next, the sequence where you have to find Merry and Pippin and the Mines of Moria are particularly confusing!
The games graphics have their own style and don't go for the look of the movies cast which is fine, they are a little low on detail but passable for an older Playstation 2 title.
The game is quite a good length but does have its problems which makes it not as fun as it should be.
Summary: A decent game.
