I don't often buy games that are based on a tv series or books as normally I find them to be very disappointing. However at the time this came out I had a lot of fun with other skateboard/snowboard sports style games so thought how different will this be other than the fact the characters and skating locations are the same as the simpsons.
I suppose any game you play will have at least one thing you like. In this I liked the concept of being able to play with well known characters plus I thought that this was a nice touch that they got the cast members in the simpsons to record the vocals in the game.
Possibly could be used as a coaster.
**What I didn't like**
Graphics- quite chunky , slowed things down. It looks quite realistic as being Springfield but it looks like when they designed it they just stuck skate ramps etc in haphazardly without thinking about the actual game play.
Game play - As I said I had played a few other games so was expecting that this would offer more in the way of skate boarding "tricks". The game claims that the 8 characters you can choose from has over 40 moves but they are not very good.
All you do in the game is try and rack up points before the timer runs out. These points don't get you any bonus material or unlock anything. I suppose you might want to beat a previous high score but I think that this would get really boring quickly.
The characters dont seem to perform any sort of moves well, even if you do max out their stats they struggle with even the basic skate board moves.
Considering how many characters the simpsons has I feel they could have offered more character choices.
**Price and where to buy**
I don't recommend this but it can be purchased new from amazon for £18 which is very high for a game that came out 12 years ago. Can be bought second hand a lot cheaper. I would say that there are a few better simpsons games out there such as hit and run (not that thats great)
I bought this game a few years ago as it was in a section for 2 games for £10 in HMV and thought that it would probably be OK and keep me entertained for a couple of weeks. I was quite wrong!
In short this game is just a horrible cheap rip off of other good skating games like Tony Hawk with awful graphics, sound, levels and basically everything!
The aim of the Simpsons Skateboarding is to simply skate around Springfield and achieve various objectives and you get to play as Homer, Bart, Lisa and Marge. As you complete various tasks you move on to another level which has different objectives. The levels are areas of Springfield designed as skate parks. The objectives are similar and are tasks such as spell "Skinner" by collecting letters, get a certain score in a certain time limit, destroy something or collect something which gets tedious very quickly.
The graphics are just plain awful even if it was released in 2002! They are extremely simple and boring and the only good thing is that the Simpsons look quite similar to the ones in the TV show!
The sound is better but it is neither good nor bad. The jokes are not particularly funny and the music is nothing special. Plus whenever you do a trick the commentator has to say it out loud which gets very very annoying very very quickly!
The gameplay is just bad and it is hard to control the characters and make them do the tricks you want them to do!
There is a multiplayer mode with the game HORSE which is OK but is just exactly the same as other skating games.
Overall this is just a horrible version of games Tony Hawk and therefore I simply can not recommend getting it.
If you don`t believe me, look at scores on other game websites which are scores like 2.5/10, 4/10 and 9/100!
When this game was being made I have a mental picture of Homer (yeah I know he is only a cartoon character) sitting there saying something like "Fans will buy any old crap so lets go for a beer" because this is not a great game to play, the cartoons might be top quality and the movie good entertainment but some of the spin off merchandise and products can be poor and this is a good example of a cashing in exercise.
In this game you travel around as one of the Simpsons family on your skateboard having to complet various objectives, the more you achieve the more characters and locations become available.
There is a complete lack of depth to this game, it is not always easy to control your characters and the controls are not at all responsive. Each character can perform tricks however these are quite limited and easy to lean.
Also the tasks you have to do are very similar and not that challenging, this is definatly a game for younger players who like repetition.
Visually there is a nice cartoon feel to it but some of the characters look different to their TV versions and the scenery becomes a bit repetitive as well.
Not one I would recommend.
During this run up to the festive period it is good to review a real turkey of a game and that is definitely the case with this offering which is a very poor relation to the excellent cartoon series.
You get to play as Marge, Homer Lisa or Bart and the objective of the game is to skateboard around Springfield achieving various objectives. As you do these additional environments are released and additional Springfield characters as well.
The main problem with this game is the complete lack of challenge that it offers most of the objectives or skills you have to perform are largely identical whatever level you find yourself on and to be honest all of the tasks are ones that you will have seen before on other far better skateboarding games.
The game play is also really annoying and the characters are not easy to control, the turning circles are wide and it is hard to make your character stop and to be honest it only takes a few minutes to master all of the available tricks.
Visually the game is nothing special, everything looks very symmetrical as if built from IKEA building blocks and the characters look plain weird with everything out of proportion.
To be honest there is little point spending much time reviewing this game as there is absolutely nothing to recommend it, if you want skateboard action stick with Tony Hawks and if you want some Simpsons then switch on Sky.
