Advantages: Highly addictive, Two player fun

Disadvantages: Level based missions not for everyone

Finally The Sims is on the PS2, and does it compete with the legendary PC version..........yes.

Sims??
In the Sims you run a households life, you can either make them flourish or make their life a misery, its totally up to you!. As with humans you have needs such as having to go to the toliet, having fun etc. These needs are represpented by bars, its your aim to keep these as high as possible and inturn make the sim happy to be able to get through life.

Start of life...
On the PS2 version you have two types of games, a level based game where you have to complete certain objectives. At the start you are living in a shack but as you complete the objectives you move up to better things. Such objectives are like, fix the tv, throw a party. Sure to keep you busy, but it can be very hard to handle the looking after of the sims and completing these objectives. This level based missions will teach new users all they need to know to get thrown into the classic version of the Sims.
Once you do a certain amount of the level based gameplay, the PC version type of the Sims is unlocked which is where the true fun starts.

On the open ended version you control everything, at the start you design what your sims will look like in great detail. You also decide their personality, loud, outgoing, quiet. Once your happy with your household its all ready to embark into the world of building a nice house for your sims. At the start you'll only be able to afford a nice cute shack but as your Sims progress up the career ladder you will gain a wage, and be able to upgrade your house, that extension you always wanted. Careers are varied, a scientist, army officer or thief, which one is your sim likely to be?
But jobs arent the only part of the Sims life, they can socialise with neighbours of their neighbourhood, but be careful not to socialise too much as often you can end up with several lovers.
If you do find the love of your life you can
marry, have a baby. See the kids grow up from a little baby into a brat that gets picked up everyday by the school bus. Only negative is all this can get boring after a while, but with plenty of items waiting to get unlocked you will still be upgrading your house for months to come, and if you want to spice up life, why not a get a fire started in the kitchen with your cooking or take the ladders out of the swimming pool when a sim is in there. All great fun, you can even meet the grim reaper!

Two player fun....
This is a unlockable extra, compete against a friend for popularity and money, all great fun seeing a friend being left out while you have many people trying to talk to you. But if two player action is what your after i would direct you to The Sims bustin out which has a better two player action (review coming your way shortly.)

Better than the pc??
Hard to really tell, the graphics are in full 3D and is beautfiul to watch, but there are several loading screens which are not as present on the PC version. The level based gameplay is not to everyone's cup of tea and can get annoying if those important objectives are not met. But on the basis of the classic game being ported over to the PS2, its a great addition to any collection especially with more extras than the pc version you'll be busy for a long while and the level of detail for your sim is amazing on the PS2.

In conclusion the ps2 version of The Sims has the qualities of the PC version such as being highly addictive. But it goes beyond the PC version and includes level based missions and 2 player action which can only be a good thing for PS2 users. But be warned, your sims life may flourish but yours will dissapear as the addiction of this game sets in. Recommended to all!!

A very good review - you have managed to draw a decent comparison with the PC version, and yet keep your points specifically directed towards this version.

You would do well to heed proxam's advice - he drinks alot of beer but he knows what he's talking about! :)

For those of you that appreciate the benefits of the PC version (loading times, expandability etc) but like the idea of a 3D graphics transformation - then keep an eye on the up-and-coming The Sims 2.
