... the disc into my PS2, but instead found myself taking on the role of a young racing driver, Ryan McKane, and stearing him through the traumas of making it big in the racing league whilst living in the shadwos of his brother and late father. Along the way, some moving FMVs are shown alongside gruelling track action against your rivals as you bid to be known as "the greatest of all time". The second thing that made this game stand out was the racing incidents. Instead of every other car being nailed to the...more

Crowned Review Toca Race Driver (PS2): How on EARTH did this happen? (930 words)

Rating:

This really is a sad example of a company knowing it can make good games, but not bothering because it knows it is guaranteed success. Codemasters have built up a reputation of releasing great racing games, the ToCA and Colin McRae rally series' in particular. Somehow, they managed to build a game that appealed to simmers, and people who just wanted an arcade blast at the same time. However, even after the disappointment of WTC (the last Touring Car game on the Ps1), nothing could've prepared us for this monstrosity. You start the game, and you come to an intro, (of course I cant say what's in it without giving away the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A racing game with a storyline!?! (348 words)

I bought this game on good faith from a friend, who claimed it to be a much improved addition to the series than the awful brick-like handling of the cars that its predecessors contained. Indeed he was right. There are two things that for me made this game stand out above other racing titles. Onew as the prescence of a storyline. Personally, I had never played a racing game with a plot. Usually it was just turn up, win some races, claim the applause and everyone goes home happy. That was what I fully expected this game to be when I first slid the disc into my PS2, but instead found myself taking on the role of a young racing driver, Ryan McKane, and stearing him ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Toca Race Driver (PS2): I've been expecting you Ryan. (749 words)

500 courses, 20,000 cars, ‘Ultimately Boring Racing’ is THE racer of the moment…blah blah blah…. We’ve seen and heard it all before when it comes to racing games when we talk of how many ‘fully licensed’ cars and ‘real-life’courses are available. Once the initial wow factor begins to wear off it all becomes a matter of unlocking the cars and tracks. That’s about it. But it seems that the boys and girls over at Codemasters were thinking the same thing because here we have Toca Race Driver and it’s rather different from the rest… You are Ryan McKane and in his racing boots your goal ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review TOCA hits the PS2 (831 words)
by - written on 27/08/02 (Very useful, 476 readings)
Rating:

You sit on the start grid, the light goes red you apply the revs, the light goes green, you slam the foot to the floor the car moves side ways as the wheels fight for grip. 14 cars thunder down the straight heading for the first corner where they is only room for one. Welcome to TOCA Race Driver the third in the Toca Band series from Codemasters and the first to come to the PS2. Thought the series of TOCA Codemasters have always managed to recreate the seem driving environment as in the real Touring Car Championship the close bumper to bumper action and incident packed races, and this also applies to TOCA Race Driver more so. While it says TOCA in the title ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Toca Race Driver (PS2): Racing is the Name of the Game (933 words)

ToCA Race Driver My boyfriend has just bought yet another racing game. The general idea, as with most racing games is to work your way through the levels by gaining enough points, to get to be No 1 in the World Championship. **CAREER** This section is where you manage your careers. You play Ryan McKane who wants to be No 1 to get out from the shadow of his brother. Here you have an email inbox where all incoming messages will be placed, these may include notifications of single day events, job offers and the personal stuff as well. To accept either job offers or single-track days highlight the message and press the cross button to accept. This ...  Read the complete review
