Advantages: Excellent stealth gameplay, gadgets, good characters and storyline
Disadvantages: Can be frustrating, quite difficult
Tom Clancys Splinter Cell is a stealth action game for the Playstation 2 developed by Ubisoft.
The story follows an old Black Ops agent Sam Fisher as you work for your commander Irving Lambert on dangerous sneaking missions , you will do things like investigate the disappearances of people and ultimately you end up saving the whole country, but as a Splinter Cell nobody can know you exist.. The story is actually very well told and gets good voice talent which adds to the experience.
Gameplay consists of stealth sequences, the game has a light meter that shows you how well concealed in the shadows you are. This works really well and you can use your silenced pistol to take out light sources to allow you to maintain your cover.
The game also gives you handful of neat gadgets like your night vision goggles which are essential, it is a bit weird that enemies don't spot the big three glowing green lights on it though and you get things like sticky cameras and sticky shockers as well as gas grenades to take out enemies non lethally.
The game can be really challenging and if you are spotted usually alarms are triggered and after three its game over for you, once spotted you must take down an enemy as quickly as possible but also you must hide the body as if another foe spots it alarms are going to be ringing! Sam is also not a bullet proof hero and can only take a little punishment so if you are sighted you are pretty much going to die, so get used to the stealth play as you will not be able to play this like a standard action game.
Graphics are pretty good with pretty detailed environments for a Playstation 2 game, though I am told the Xbox version was a bit sharper. Sam is voiced by Michael Ironside and he does a great job of getting into the character of the gruff Sam Fisher.
Splinter Cell is an excellent stealth game with really good stealth mechanics, it's not as good as a Metal Gear but it certainly offers more realistic action.
Summary: Sam Fishers first adventure.
