Transformers: The Game (PS2)
Disadvantages: terrible game
Transformers is a franchise which has been around for a while, and is based on the idea of robots that can transform into cars, trucks, plane etc basically fighting it out, between decepticons and autobots. I personally have loved transformers since I was a little ankle biter, and here is my review of the game.
What is kinda cool about this game is that you can choose to be autobot, or decepticon. Sadly you pretty much cannot decide which robot you are, it sort of selects one for you based on your position (normally bumblebee, or the police car guy depending on if you are good or evil). Anyway, it is sort of a free roam game, but with missions. Sadly the freeroam is kinda of pointless unless you are deceptcon, as only then can you really get points by smashing up civilians. As autobot in freeroam, you more just have to wait for you to see something.
In this game you don't really face off against other robots from the film, mostly its just lesser robots who you get the feeling have just been invented for the sake of this game. And the proportion of cars/trucks/lorries that are actually robots seems way off. What makes it worse is that they are always against you! I would find this game way more fun if it wasn't just yourself vs about 100 weak robots yourself, but rather you and 49 other robots vs 50 similar matched robots. Also I would have loved some sort of customise feature, letting you design you own robot. sadly this is not availble.
Other problems with this game include a poor plot for the campaign, and annoying challenges in the missions. In almost every mission, it goes like this, get to an area within a time limit (so car mode), then fight some enemies, then either chase someone or escape, then repeat, until the mission is over. It adds a fun part when you first play this, you feel like the level map is massive, but after a few times it becomes a bit predictable... and dare i say it, boring! And plus, I hate not being able to stand and watch some of the cool morphing robot bits, because you have to keep one eye on the time instead!
The driving mechanics are not that great, not compared with say need for speed, or burnout, etc. And the fighting feels slow compared to other games. Ok yes, it kinda has to feel slow, they are huge robots ashing each other, but you kinda of get the feeling its, they throw a punch, then me, then them etc etc, it doesn't feel very fluid.
Overall then, this is a shamelss game cashing in on a great franchise while offering nothing new. Not a game I would get, and I love transformers, 1/5.
Summary: just cashing in
