Disadvantages: Poor story mode, No WCW/ECW, A little too easy?
Smackdown JBI for PS2............. Now first of all I was surprised to find out it was released a week before it was surposed to be.(Which is a good thing.) So I rushed home from work with my copy and put it on.
Well my first impression was that it looked stunning. Very WWF P.P.V. I must say. So we're off to a good start.
Now when they boast about there being a LOT of matches it's sort of a lie. There's not 70 different matches. There's 70 different kinds of the same matches. There's no casket Match, inferno or Firsat blood match, The Cell is still a part of the ring as oppoesed to surround ringside. Now these maybe seem a bit picky to some of you butif the makers of SD were "BIG WWWF fans" as we're led to beleive then maybe their attention to detail would have made these other things possible.
The matches themselves when you play them are fun, Even more fun with a few mates and you don't have to wait for a new wrestler to load when you play the Royal Rumble this time. (Another good thing.)Oh yeah and the entrances are pretty cool too
Want to create a Wrestler? no problem it has the ususal Create mode. Now this is BIG! there is laods of options in this, some have to be unlock but we'll get to that in a moment. It seems to can modify every part of the body in this mode to your heart's content. You are also able to create a taunt and make your self a stable or group of wrestlers for people who don't follow the WWF
Now we come to what I hoped would be very good......The story mode. I had very high hopes for this. The last two games had a season mode but they were a bit too random for having matches anfd defending belts. So I thought, AHA! more involved they've sorted it. First you choose you wrestler, now there is no W.C.W/E.C.W wrestlers in the game.....well apart from the ones who were in the W.W.F. before that storyline got under way. Now there is TWO mains differences to t
his story mode.
1) You can only play it one player so no two player tag teams here. (Which sucks by the way.) and
2) It's wrong, so wrong. you start it a you get offered a shot at the tag belts. I won the world title in THREE MATCHES!!!! then it ended. So I thought I pressed somethinfg wrong and went to defend my belt. Won the match, again it ended. Now I should point out that you DO indeed get choices in story mode but I don't want the EXACT SAME choices every time I play it with a new wrestler. You just don't want to care too much about trying to unlock extra wrestlers or arenas and so forth, Please I want my radomised season back.
Have I finished it yet? No not quite, that's not to say I won't finish it in the next few days but hey you never know.
In closing if you are looking for something longterm in a wrestling game try the first two SD's, that's not to say this is a bad game, it's a very good game. They just missed out on making it a GREAT game because of the story mode. Let's hope Legends of wrestling makes up for this mistake. So Acclaim it's up to you to pick up the fallen ball. OH and before I go Tazz and Micheal Cole's commentry. VERY, VERY BAD!
