Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)
by footballgirl07 When the next game in the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series was announced, the first for the 'then' next generation consoles (PS3 and X-box 360), fans around the world waited in anticipation for what Rock* would come up with next. Would it meet overwhelming expectations, or disappoint the legions of fans of this award wining and ... controversial series. Story: Your Niko Bellic, a veteran of an unnamed war in Eastern Europe, who is haunted by the betrayal of his 15 man army unit. A decade later and a smuggling run goes bad due too a betrayal from his partner. Niko escapes Eastern Europe and the anger of his boss, Ray Bulgarin. After spending 6months in the merchant Navy, upon the ship Platypus. Niko heads to Liberty City to peruse the American dream that his cousin, Roman, told wonderful stories about, of riches, fast cars and ladies! With Niko still hunting for the traitor from his army days and discovering his cousin doesn't live the American dream. Niko finds Liberty City isn't all what it's cracked up to be. With old enemies and new ones, Niko has to battle on the streets of America just to survive. Will his past catch up with him? Can he really start a fresh live with his cousin? Or will his dream turn into a nightmare? Visuals: Rock* make visually stunning games. From the environment themselves, the vibrant sea smashing into the beaches and cliffs, the detail that goes into the vehicles design and the buildings in the landscape of the Cities. It's a thing of beauty that does really make you go wow when you first experience it and continues to leave you stunned with every passing second. Rock* make great sun sets, I mean sitting in a car or on a motorbike on top of a cliff or on a beach, watching the sun rise over the sea. Who cares about guns when you can watch a sun like that rise over the sea! Truly a remarkable game. Audio: With the GTA series, the radio in the vehicles become the soundtrack to your game. With 19 radio stations to choose from, including 3 talk radio stations, your sure to find something to your liking to cruise around the roads too. Liberty Rock Radio is my favourite, but sometimes I'll stick on The Vibe for a bit of R&B. You can choose from reggae, rock, R&B, eastern European rock, pop, Latino, disco, hard rock, jazz, electro house and chill out music. Really has a huge variation to pick from and too which you want to drive too. Gameplay: GTA game means one thing, open world exploring! As with the majority of Rock* games, the different islands/areas will open up as you progress in the story. Liberty City is based upon New York City, with the various boroughs given different names. You can also visit various real life landmarks but which have been given different names in the game. For example, why not take a helicopter site seeing tour of the statue of Happiness, aka the Statue of Liberty? Or take a drive over Brooklyn Bridge, Broker bridge in game. You really can just go and explore where ever you want. Just leave the missions and head out on the open road. With various types of vehicles at your disposable; cars, motorbikes, buses, trucks, helicopters and boats, you can really have some fun around Liberty City. Taxi cabs can be called if you can't be asked to drive or if a location is far away. You can skip to the destination as soon as you enter the taxi. There is a subway system to use as well, which links up various parts of each cities. So you really don't have to walk anymore! There are side missions to complete if you wish too. These include; locating and destroying criminals through the use of a police car and computer, street races and finding the flying rats, aka the pigeon. These side missions can have you adding hours to make the game last even longer. There are some main missions during the story which you have to make a choice on what path you choose. Your choice will have a baring on how the story pans out, so this adds to the replay value. Play one way and then replay the second way. The combat system has improved, now you can move between covers and free aim, or shoot blindly if you like. It's a lot more realistic when in a gun battle now. Making sure you have body armour will help with stopping your health getting hit, but if you do start getting low health, stopping off at a hospital or takeaway joint, will replenish your health. Now if you have been up to no good and this is GTA, so course your going to get into trouble! The police will obviously come after you. Now everyone likes a good police chase, especially in a fast car! You can still lose the police by various means; hiding from there sight, changing the colour of your car and entering one of your safehouses. You can also attempt to escape before being handcuffed when on foot, whilst on a one star wanted level. The use of your phone has now become integral to the story and other activities. You can arrange various activities with other characters to build up there respect level and earn rewards. There are many to choose from: eating out, darts, bowling, strip show, comedy show and drinking. When you go out drinking, after the cutscene your screen will start to wobble and sway, like you are actually drunk. You see Niko struggling to keep his balance and keep falling over, I love these little touches they have added. The use of emails are intertwined with the side missions and main missions as well. Weapons are important in GTA and there are vast amount of different ones available to you to use. The aiming system now includes, when locked on to someone, a clear health bar telling you how much health they have left. Combat has improved as well, with more moves to use when in a fight. Shops are around to update your wardrobe or buy a flash fancy suit, or perhaps you just fancy a change of look. Conclusion: I had really high hopes for this game. The previous GTA, GTA San Andreas, was my favourite from the series and with the new console, I really expected a piece of gaming history. I was left feeling rather disappointed instead. You can't dismiss the beautiful graphics, the great soundtrack and much improved overall gameplay and even the story is good. But this game lacked that true GTA feel. It took itself very seriously unlike all the others. They had fun missions doing silly stuff to mix up the serious side of the story. This game in parts felt like a chore and who wants to play a game like that. Video games are there to escape and have fun. From the previous few games, I can remember missions that I loved and was totally enthralled by. In GTA IV there is only a couple which I did really enjoy. The side missions and activities to take part in are fun and do prolong and mix the game up. The vehicles look and drive brilliantly, these are some of the positives. This game could of been fantastic, instead its just great. Read the complete review |

Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City (PS3)
by footballgirl07 2009 bought the release of Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City. Two games in one and non-stop entertainment. Story - The Lost and Damned: Jonathan 'Johnny' Klebitz, a member of the famous biker gang, The Lost Motorcycle Club, is riding with his fellow gang members through the streets of Alderney. He's vice ... president but been acting leader since the real leader has been locked up in prison. The gang suffered through Billy's, the real leader, poor leadership skills. So Johnny has been working on truces and deals with other gangs, which lead to The Lost Motorcycle gang being the main boys of the Liberty City streets again. However, Billy gets released from prison and wants to go back running the gang how he did it. This becomes apparent when Billy starts a gang war with there arch enemies, the Angels of Death. A gang which Johnny had work hard on resolving the issues with, whilst Billy was inside. With Billy now back in charge, destruction, death and mayhem will follow. What can Johnny do to save Liberty City and the gang he loves so much. The Ballad of Gay Tony: Luis Fernando Lopez is being held hostage in a raid on a bank. After the criminals scarper and Luis is questioned by police, he heads to Gay Tony's loft and bumps into a senior Ancelotti mobster, who is there to collect Gay Tony's nightclub income to pay off that weeks interest on an outstanding loan. Tony talks to Luis about his dire financial situation he is in with the two clubs he owns; Maisonette 9 and Hercules. In an attempt to gain some favour with the senior Ancelotti mobster, Luis and Tony head to Chinatown to negotiate a deal with a senior Triad member. But things go wrong and Luis has to step in to protect Tony as they escape through the streets of Liberty City. Can Luis help his friend Tony, whilst the Ancelotti mobsters and Triads are on to them. Visuals: Amazing graphics which are very life like, in terms of the characters and vehicles. You would expect nothing less from a Rock* game. Beautiful graphics, with amazing views of a fantastic looking city and just so vibrant. With the Lost and Damned, your more set in the poorer part of town, where the gang wars have kept the good people away. You can see this with all the detail they go into when creating the different environments. I mean, in the Ballard of Gay Tony, the club and other places you visit are ment to look lively and a lot more upmarket, more the posher side of the City. The parachute was last seen in GTA: San Andreas and it was nice to see it back again with the upgraded graphics. When your base jumping or sky diving, the buildings on the ground, vehicles on the road and even the vibrant blue sky and sea, it's just a fantastic sequence of beautiful scenery. Cruising around the City and checking out the views can easily take up your time, especially watching the sun come up or setting over the ocean. They really created a visual masterpiece. Audio: With every GTA game you have the radio stations as your soundtrack. This is one of my favourite parts of GTA, as you can cycle through all the different stations and find something you will like. Some great tunes are in this game and there's nothing like powering through the City on your motorbike or in a fast car, listening to some cracking music. Gameplay: These two games both in some way link into the previous GTA game, GTA IV. You see some missions but via a different angle/character, characters from GTA IV are seen in both episodes and characters from the episodes, can also been seen in the other episode (Keeping up?!) Now I love when you have characters from previous games linking into the next game. It gives gamers great satisfaction to see the game studios care about how gamers care for the characters they have spent quite a lot of time and effort on. Plus its a bonus when it's done as well as Rock* did, by involving the characters in different parts of the different stories in each game. It was really cleverly done and adds to the great experience had overall. The Lost and Damned is about a motorcycle gang, so your obviously going to spend the majority of the game on a motorbike. Now I love the motorbikes from the GTA universe, so I really enjoyed this game no end. However, my brother hates them (probably down to him being a poor driver on them but sshh!), so he didn't like this game as much. Depending on previous experience on motorbikes in GTA games, you may not enjoy this game as much. But I reckon the story will have you hooked, so it shouldn't be too bad. This episode bought some great additions that hadn't been available before in a GTA game. For example, you could use your phone to ring up other gang members who would meet you nearby to drop off weapons and armour and if you needed a new bike, another member would drop it off right where you standing. This was a really cool and worked well in the game. Another was gang wars which involved members of your gang, joining you in gang wars all over the City and with every war won, you had weapons become available at your safehouse and clubhouse. There were also the normal side mission in the races which you can take part in all around the different islands. With the Ballard of Gay Tony, new weapons and vehicles were available and the parachute returned. Base jumping and sky diving challenges are the side missions and really are brilliant and exhilarating to play. You can visit Tony's two nightclubs and take part in drinking games and dancing competitions. Plus if you fancy, takeover head security and deal with famous people, paparazzi and drunken idiots. There is also an underground fighting tournament, which has fantastic graphics and flawless combat mode, a great addition to the main story. Drug wars are dotted over the islands for you to complete, which help to break up and make the main story last longer. Conclusion: Since GTA: Vice City, I have played all the GTA games. GTA IV disappointed me, but these two episodes in a way, righted all that was wrong. Yes, the graphics really are stunning, the gameplay flawless and you still have the fun radio station soundtrack. But these two episodes went back to the more fun side of GTA. There are some fantastic missions and they are a joy to play, nothing feels a chore, unlike GTA IV. They really got back on form with these episodes and create two wonderful stories, with great characters, added mini games and a fantastic game from start to finish. They aren't long games but they were originally DLC packs (downloadable content) and for the price you pay and for getting two games in one, this really is a bargain for what Rock* have created. Whether in a high-end sports car or on a motorbike, cruising through the streets just got a lot more fun and spectacular to experience. Read the complete review |

Half-Life 2: The Orange Box (PS3)
by footballgirl07 In 2007, Valve Corporation released a compilation of 5 games on one disc, The Orange Box. With Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2 episode 1, Half-Life episode 2, Portal and Team Fortress. It was a bargain price to pay to play the cracking Half-Life 2. A journey and adventure with lots of questions and enemies. Get ready to ... explore! Story: Back history: Gordon Freeman, a scientist at the Black Mesa Research Facility, located in a place called City 17, and other scientists accidentally cause an inter-dimensional instability known as a resonance cascade, when doing an experiment on an alien crystal sample goes wrong. Aliens entered through the rift and Freeman fights against them and government cover up units. After reaching the research facilities other complex, the scientists help Freeman to transport to the aliens world. Destroying the alien keeping the rift open, Freeman is taken away by a strange person known as G-Man. Impressed by Freeman's battling qualities and never accepting defeat attitude, G-Man offers him a job before placing him into stasis. After this war, another enemy took interest at the instability at Black Mesa and invaded Earth. This enemy is called the Combine and forced Humanity to surrender at the end of the "Seven hour war". City 17 is now the base and home of the huge Combine Citadel, who employ a brutal police state on humanity. However, a rebel group of humans and Vortigaunts are working together in an attempt to find freedom. This group sees Freeman as their saviour, the hero of humanity. Half-Life 2 and both episodes: 20years after those events, Half-Life2 starts. Gordon Freeman is bought out of stasis by this mysterious G-Man and sends him on a train to City 17. Upon arrival, he manages to escape the combine forces and joins the resistance crew, set up by a former Black Mesa worker and Alyx Vance, the daughter of one of Freemans former workmate, Dr Eli Vance. You are trying to get to Black Mesa East but the teleport fails and so you set out on a journey through the City's old canal system. You reach Black Mesa East but it comes under attack, forcing you to fight the Combine. This is the start of a thrilling adventure set in the futuristic world, with humanity under threat and only you, as Dr Gordon Freeman, can battle it out with the Combine and understand who is this G-Man and what does he want?! Both Episodes 1&2 are just as exciting and enthralling, as you escape the City restraints and head into a more wild area. With bigger and badder enemies, the Combine only have you in their sights. Spoilers would ruin this game, so won't divulge the storyline. Play it and witness this great game for yourself, you won't be disappointed. Team fortress 2: This is just a multi-player first person shooter. Portal: A first person puzzle platform game. Can't really describe the game without spoiling it but it is a unique game. Visuals: Half-Life 2 came out in 2004, with the episodes coming out 2006 & 07 respectively. You think there would be a massive jump in graphics, but there really isn't. This down to the fact that Half-Life 2 was so beautifully created in 04, it could easily stand up and beat any competition a few years later. The environments through out the 3 games, are uniquely drawn to make each area you visit so alive and yet have that feeling of humanity being destroyed, hanging in the air. The aliens are drawn with that scare factor and evil feel. The headcrabs really are creepy, but once you are used to them, I think they look like dead turkeys ready for Christmas dinner. I probably try to think this, as they really do scare me! In Half-Life 2, there is such a creepy place called Ravenholm. I recommend that you don't play this in the dark as its one of the most scariest part of a game I have ever played. Really does make me shiver when thinking of it now! This is a well drawn and stunning game, truly one of the best visually games from the early 2000's. Audio: The soundtrack has the futuristic feel, so it keeps in with the game on the whole. It does have the slower songs when the story calls for it and mixes it up really well. A game so expansive and well written as Half-Life 2 and the Episodes needed a great soundtrack and this really does deliver. Gameplay: This is a first person shooter, with a range of weapons and tools to use at your advantage. One of the coolest weapons is called the Gravity Gun, which you use to move boxes, or fire them at the Combine if you like, to move anything that's laying around to make your own path way and also to pick up other items, like the saw heads which you can aim at the enemy and save up your ammo. There are puzzles along the way that you need to use your Gravity Gun to solve. This is a linear game, which means you can only stick to the storyline and where the paths take you . You can't just go off and explore, or go back to an area you once was. You stick to the story and to be honest, it's such a great story, you would not want to just go and wander. The action doesn't stop. Conclusion: For 5 games, you can get this compilation at a steal. Even just for the Half-Life games alone, the price is so low! A brilliantly written game, with beautiful graphics and flawless gameplay. The only disappointment I have is with Valve itself. They made these superb games in what feels a lifetime ago and we are still waiting to know what happened next after the dramatic ending of Episode 2. It really does drive you crazy not knowing. This isn't your usual first person shooter, you need to think about it when planing what you need to do next. There are some areas which call for logic puzzles to be solved to advance, you can't just blow stuff up and expect to suddenly progress. This adds to the beauty of this game and what makes it a favourite among many gamers. Games that make you think and have action throughout, are games that true players want to experience. If you haven't experienced Half-Life yet, then you are missing out on one of the best games ever created. Read the complete review |
