Okami HD (PS3)
by SWSt Okami is one of those cult games that dares to be different and, depending on your point of view, is either a triumph, or suffers because of it. Originally released to great acclaim on the PS2 and Wii, it's now been given a HD makeover in this digital download PS3 version. You are the white wolf Sun goddess Amaterasu who is ... awoken from a long sleep to do battle with an evil monster who has cast darkness over the land. With her guide Issun (an annoying bug), she must explore the land and rid it of the evil. Things get off to a bit of a mixed start. The game begins with a massive introduction that establishes the setting and history to the plot. This is features beautiful drawn images and looks absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, it's also very, very long, lasting for about 15-20 minutes with no break. Whilst it certainly helps to set the scene for what is to follow, it started to feel like I was sitting watching a cartoon rather than playing a game and it went on for so long that I began to wonder whether there was actually a game in there at all. There can be no doubting that Okami looks beautiful, particularly in this new HD version. The graphics are incredible. It might sound a bit of a cliché, but it really is like playing a cartoon. Manga-inspired, cel-shaded images are beautifully drawn and fluidly animated and give Okami a unique look. Your onscreen avatar in particular is gorgeously animated and looks so good that you feel a real affinity with her. Other characters are nicely drawn and give the game a sense of realism, depth and style. Ok, so the scenery doesn't quite match it and some locations feel a little samey and are clearly built from standard graphic blocks (which can result in you getting lost if you're not careful), but they still look good and there's enough variety between different areas to help you feel a real sense of progression. Camera angles can cause a bit of an issue. You need to master use of these quite early on, but they feel clunkily implemented, reminiscent of some of the early PS1 games when developers were still getting used to creating games in a 3D environment. The right stick is used to control the camera angle (zooming in and out etc.) and it can feel very awkward trying to get right level of zoom or the correct angle. This is particularly problematic in the middle of some of the more frantic sections when getting the right angle quickly is essential. Despite looking good, the game is badly let down by the audio experience. Tunes soon become repetitive, whilst the "dialogue" between characters is downright annoying. Rather than having full speech, characters speak in a kind of three or four note chirping that simply loops constantly while that character is talking. After just a few sentences, this becomes very irritating; in some of the lengthier cut-scenes it became so annoying that I was ready to throw the controller at the TV. In the end I resorted to the mute button whenever cut-scenes started. It's a pity, because the designers have obviously tried to come up with something quirky which matches the unique graphical style, but have actually spoiled things. The real issue (for me) is the gameplay itself. It boils down to an awful lot of wandering around similar looking locations, talking to various characters, completing different quests, smashing pots and collecting things as you go along. The gameplay felt old and tired, like a very early PS1 title and I quickly found myself becoming bored with the repetitive gameplay. Combat is also rather easy and once you have mastered a few basic techniques, you can essentially use these against pretty much any standard enemy. There's no need or incentive to learn new skills or techniques and so combat sequences also become rather dull and repetitive. Perhaps it becomes more difficult later on and requires the player to learn new fighting techniques. I don't know... the dull nature of the gameplay meant that I had no real incentive to play on and find out. In fairness, Okami does introduce some innovative techniques which are a little tricky to explain but work very well. Part of the story involves finding the brush techniques left behind by the gods (don't ask!). Once found, these can be used to draw new bits on the screen to help you reach otherwise inaccessible areas. Bridge down? No problem! Just draw one and off you go. This unique element adds an extra dimension to the otherwise explore and fight gameplay. In fairness, this is probably the wrong game for me. I'm not a huge fan of open RPG style games and tend to lose interest in them quite quickly. If you like games like Legend of Zelda, then the chances are that you will think this is fantastic; the perfect blend of stunning graphics, strong story and massive exploration-based gameplay. If you prefer shorter blasts of action then you will find it rather pedestrian. If you do buy into it, I can easily see you losing hours of your life to Okami, because it's massive - the type of game the word "epic" was invented for. There is lots to explore, countless characters to meet/help/ fight and lots of quests to complete. Okami has hours and hours of gameplay underneath its gorgeously animated bonnet... it's just not the game for me. This HD version is available as a digital download from the Playstation Store. At £15.99 it's not cheap, and had I paid for it (I got it free as part of my Playstation Plus subscription), I would have felt deeply unhappy. However, if you enjoy massive Zelda style, exploration/action games, then it's a worthy purchase... You just might want to try it before you buy. (c) copyright SWSt 2013 Read the complete review |

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3)
by footballgirl07 2009 and with it brings the 6th installement of the Call of Duty series. Some say this is the most controversial game, but the story is intense and the action even better. Story: This game follows on straight from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and with the fallout at the end of that game; the Russians attempt at blowing up ... America with nuclear weapons. As well as there ultranationalists support of Khaled Al-Asad, a middle eastern country ruler with strong anti-western views, who was killed in the previous game. Imran Zakheav is declared a hero, after his ultranationalists terrorist group taken control of Russia. With relations strained between Russia and America, a war is on its way. Zakheav righthand man, Vladimir Makarov, is set on avenging the death of Zakheav. His acts of terrorism have to be stopped. Afghanistan and playing as Private First Class Allen of the US Rangers, your ability impresses Lieutenant General Shepherd. He recruits you to an elite counter-terrorist unit, Taskforce 141. You are sent undercover for the CIA to Russia and alongside Makarov to take part in a terrorist attack. However Makarov knows you're an American soldier and pins the terrorist attack on you and America. With Russia outraged by this act of terrorism, Russia start an invasion on America and with it, a war that you battle on for the sake of your fellow man. Alongside this battle to defend America, other members of elite Taskforce 141, including 'Soap' MacTavish, who is now a Captain, are on the mission to search for evidence that Makarov was the mastermind behind the terrorist attack and not America. With Private Allen dead, they have to dig deeper and have intelligence that suggests a contact of Makarovs lives in a favela in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. A weapons collector by the name of Rojas gives them information that can help. As Sergeant 'Roach' Sanderson, we learn that Makarovs worst enemy, known as prisoner 627, is holed up in a Russian gulag. Taskforce 141 assault the prison to locate the prisoner and receive a shock as to who he is. With him in tow, it's a race against time to stop the Russian invasion. Using a ballistic missile, prisoner 627 sets of a nuclear warhead in the upper atmosphere, deliberately destroying the international space station and wiping out all electrical equipment due to the electronic pulse. Now its not about laser targets, now its down to old fashion free aiming. With the battle on, it's time to holster up and wait for a story that leaves you guessing until the very end. This is going to be ride, so be prepared for anything and everything. Visuals: With every Call of Duty game, the graphics just get better and better. The detail of the Whitehouse, the cool burger restaurant and petrol station your based at, even down to the ordinary townhouses. It really does make you feel your fighting a real war. The favelas are really exciting to play at, with the chickens running about and the guys running about on the roofs. Early on in the game you infiltrate a Russian airbase up in the mountains. All around you is snow covered cliffs. The environment created all through this game adds to the excitement. When all the electronic devices become obsolete, everything becomes literally and figuratively darker. The sense of apprehension in the air is visible for all to see. Graphics play a huge part in today's games and Treyarch really know how to make a beautiful game. Audio: With a big game, you need a big name behind the music. None other than the great Hans Zimmer produced the main theme to MW2 and you can tell. With a movie like feel to it, it really gets you going in preparation for what you are about to take part in. The rest of the soundtrack is by Lorne Balfe and creates some truly remarkable music that really grabs the emotion you are feeling at that moment in the game. There are some outstanding tracks like the Whitehouse battle. The music for this level really is intense on many levels. Really does make you feel the pressure of the battle. Another standout track is Code of Conduct, which is from the mission in the bone yard. It has that slow quiet build up of where you know and can feel that apprehension. It really does make you understand that its you alone against loads of men, but this is the battle you need to win. The highlight of the whole soundtrack is a track called Coup de Grace. This music alone is so beautifully sad but hand in hand with the part of the game its in. Its haunting and just with the visuals/story makes you feel hollow inside. I have the last two tracks I've mentioned on my iPod. This soundtrack is amazing and just works so well to create this masterpiece of a game. Gameplay: The game starts and sets the scene really well. With the great cut scenes and the ridiculously brilliant voice acting again, you understand straight what this game has in store for you. This isn't going to be easy, but then when is a 'great' game ever easy. The combat is still fantastic and gets you right involved with enemy. The story sends you to different countries, which are beautifully represented and with the fantastic story, you think this game can't get any better. Wrong. Yes, you could argue same old Call of Duty first person shooter but different story etc. But it isn't. Everything in this game has improved from there last game (World at War). Now I really enjoyed that game and would have been happy to see similar engine and everything else in MW2. But they knew that could make an even better game this time and they did. The twists in the storyline, the crazy gun battles that you take part in. They ramped up the excitement levels to such an immense level and yet at the same time of all the blood spill, this game doesn't lose its heart. The guns are bigger, better and more inline with todays' weapons, the graphics are stunning, the soundtrack adding another level to the experience. But you still fell that emotion when your fighting side by side your comrades. No one is left behind ever. Its kept its core and grown, big time. There are collectibles in this game in the form of laptops that can be found multiple times on each level. Controversy: If you didn't know, back when MW2 came out, a lot of controversy surrounded it. This was due too the level when, as Private Allen undercover, you take part in a terrorist attack on a Russian airport killing many innocent people. Firstly, there is an option at the beginning of the level where you can skip the mission if you don't wish to play. I have played through the level multiple times now but I have never fired a bullet until the fight at the end with the police. That's just me, but having played through the level I do not see the issue and the controversy. This is a game and not real life. You are not physically there and shooting real life innocent people. I know this is getting close to the 'violent video games should be banned' debate, so I'll stop now before I bore people and this is about a game and not politics. Conclusion: This review is written from the perspective of the single player campaign only. With every Call of Duty game, it gets bigger and better. With returning characters and again top notch voice acting, mixed in with the superb graphics, blockbuster soundtrack, this game will blow your mind. From, Afghanistan, Russia, Brazil, America and even a quick view of space, you find that war doesn't just happen on the front-line. You feel that buzz and adrenaline rush as you go in to battle and wonder where your heading next. I'm not going to include spoilers as I want players to feel what I felt when I first played through it. There are several moments, especially one in particular, that really hit you. It feels wrong with what happens. It feels like it is truly happening to a friend. Now to someone who has played this game, they will understand what I'm talking about. It really does leave you wondering why they did this and yet at the same time, it shows a more realistic view of war and terrorism. There has only been one other game that has made me empty so to speak. But after one of the missions, you really feel it and with that music, its really hard to take. Even today I still get that hair on the back of the neck stand up feeling. It really is so hard to stomach. This game has twists to a fantastic story. Play it, otherwise you will never know what truly happens, nor what the future holds. Read the complete review |

Call of Duty: World at War (PS3)
by footballgirl07 2008 bought the next game in the Call of Duty series, Call of Duty World at War. This time Treyarch set it in World War II, concentrating on the Pacific and Eastern fronts. This is a war and it's time to get dirty. Story: World War II. This game will show you two different perspectives as the battle for survival and hope ... begins and ends. Starting in the Pacific with the US Marines, you witness the brutal Japanese soldiers, torture and murder you comrades. Just as its your turn, Captain Roebuck and US Marines unit turn up to save you and this is how you begin. As Private Miller, you battle alongside your comrades against the fearless Japanese. As you try to take the Japanese stronghold of Peleliu, battling on the bloodied beaches, bullets gliding just past your ear. Tanks, mortar pits, flame-throwers. It's up to you and your comrades to push on and stop the devastation the Japanese have caused. In one mission, as Petty Officer Locke, you take control of a flying-boat in the Battle of Okinawa. As you fight to save the lives of your fellow American, gunships and Japanese Zeroes trying to destroy you. Back with the Marines, back with Private Miller, Captain Roebuck and the rest of the unit. Fighting till the bitter end against a dogged, ruthless foe. You will lose friends, but you will never stop fighting for there honour. The other viewpoint we play from is with Private Dmitri Petrenko of the Russian army. Starting with the Battle of Stalingrad, surrounded by your colleagues dead, dying or being murdered by the Nazis in front of you. They believe you are dead and leave. Crawling amongst the bodies and blood, a fellow soldier is alive. Sergeant Viktor Reznov. He tells you of his plan to retake 'Mother Russia' but needs your help. After slipping by some Nazis, you regroup with Reznov unit and head to your target, a German General who is responsible for the massacre of millions of Russians. It is up to you and Reznov to take back Russia and this is the start of a friendship that will last a long time. From Russia, you head to Germany, you head there for one thing in mind, revenge. In a battle that leads you to the Reichstag, a fight with the bullets ricocheting of walls, comrades falling. But you will reach your goal and no one will stop you... Visuals: The graphics are insanely good in this game. I love how you need the use of shadows to tactically work out a way around or through the enemy. The fires crackling away, the water hitting the shores are all amazingly done. The details, little and big, make this game visually superb and so pleasing to the eye. How can I forget the blood splatter. It's so realistic. From the beaches and jungles of the pacific Islands, to the urbanised yet destroyed landscape of Stalingrad and then Nazi held Germany itself. The beauty and destruction of the human race collide with the natural environment you fight in. Audio: With the game have a darker feel with the story, the soundtrack has a much more heavier feel. Definitely has a hard rock music feel to help showcase the emotions you go through in the eye of the storm which is war. The music does ramp up as well when something is about to happen. With the Soviet story, you get that type of music as well. Proper music to inspire you in to battle. A great composition which works really well with the visuals and story. Gameplay: The brutality at the beginning is so beautifully done. It shocks you but shows the real side of war. The hand to hand combat has improved and adds another impressive element to the fight. The controls are easy to master. The missions are really well scripted and use a cracking bunch of actors to deliver the lines. They really pushed the boat and it paid off big time. When your making your way through the long grass and suddenly and Japanese soldier jumps out at you with a bayonet, you find yourself fighting for survival. These moments of quietness always lead up to something. There is always something waiting for you around the corner. It does get you waiting, knowing that something is going to come when you least expect it so you have to be ready. Your always on the edge and know one slip of attention and your essentially dead meat. The little cut scenes leading up to the mission with the drawings and videos are done well and done in a WWII feel. From the US Marines, you have the Russian Privates view, starting with the Battle of Stalingrad. With this there's a completely different approach as your character and Sergeant Reznov, are the only members of the Russian army still alive in the surrounding area. The different feel and play adds to the game on the whole. One minute your in a battle to the death with the Japanese, next your stealthy killing Nazis. It really is intense. There is a death card to collect in all but 2 of the missions. Conclusion: This review is written from the perspective of the single player campaign only. This is the 2nd Call of Duty game I have played, the first being Call of Duty 4 Modern warfare and did disappoint me. However, when I started this game, it felt completely different to the previous. Yes its still a first person shooter and brutal but this game felt more refined in every aspect. The graphics, story, voice acting have all excelled and mixed in with the brutal-ness, adds to a fantastic game. The replay ability is there as this game lets you escape into a life of a soldier in WWII and feel what they felt and understand what the word comrade ment. This game is dark but it always leaves you with that respect and perception of the dangers of war. This is the last WWII game they made in the series. I really think they created a brilliant game here, so I was gutted when they haven't gone back to the olden days, back to the 'real' battles and wars. The ending of this game does hit you big time. In both the pacific and Red Army campaign, when the story comes to an end, you feel it. You feel the sense of loss and victory. Do you feel happy that you won? Or do you feel sad for all your lost friends. People say that its lame to think of a game like this. But truth is, these characters you have fought alongside. Of course your going to care. We are human after all. Read the complete review |
