Sleeping Dogs (PS3)
by TheProffesional Intro: Let's get this out of the way. Sleeping Dogs is a very fun game. It has some great gameplay elements which are superb. Sleeping Dogs is not the most original game; it borrows of ton of aspects from other games but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sleeping Dogs strives to have that Hong Kong action movie feel and it ... achieves it wonderfully. Sleeping Dogs is a single player game only and it proves that you don't need to have multiplayer to be a great game. Story: The story in Sleeping Dogs is the best thing about it. In Sleeping Dogs, you play as a cop named Wei Shen. Wei is originally from Hong Kong but went to the States when he was young to escape the bad influences he faced. Now all grown up, Wei goes back to Hong Kong as an undercover cop. His mission is to take down one of the most devastating and ruthless crime organizations in Hong Kong by taking it apart from the inside. The game is filled with wonderful and wholly alive characters. For example, you have your childhood best friend Jackie and a despicable, personal rival named Dogeyes. As said, the story is first class and really the driving force behind the game and it only gets better as the game progresses. You start off as minor triad goon and work your way up. Wei is a great protagonist, who unlike other open world game heroes is not an entirely violent and cold person; he is genuinely likable and has a great back story. Sleeping Dogs story should take around 15-25 hours to beat depending on whether you play side missions too. Graphics and Presentation: Hong Kong looks great. The graphics are very good especially when you're viewing something from a distance. It is amazing when you're driving and you see the Hong Kong skyline and the skyscrapers that make it up. One thing that you will undoubtedly notice when playing is how awesome the game looks when it is raining in it. Honestly, this game probably has the best rain effect that I have ever seen in a game. Still though, there are some parts that Sleeping Dogs could improve upon in the graphical department. The game has a pretty poor drawing distance and that is a bit irritating when you are driving at high speeds and then a car pops up and you crash. Another thing I didn't like was the textures on objects when you view them close up. The characters also look very plastic when viewed up close. Despite those critiques, the game is still very good looking. Hong Kong is filled with wholly alive characters and NPCs and it makes the presentation great. While it isn't the most accurate representation of Hong Kong, the game no doubt still feels authentic. Civilians on the streets will talk about what's happening in the world of Hong Kong. They will recognize you and start talking about you too. You can also do other things in Hong Kong such as bet on cock fights, play illegal games of poker, go on a date with a girl friend and even sing karaoke. Karaoke is a mixed experience. I mean I loved when Wei was singing 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun', it was very funny but the gameplay element to it can be tedious and get repetitive. There are other things you can do in Hong Kong as well such as going to stores and buying clothes or going to street vendors and buying goods from them. All in all, Hong Kong feels very alive. Gameplay: The gameplay for Sleeping Dogs is great. It is tons of fun to play it, even though it borrows things from other games. I'll start off first by discussing the driving. Driving in Sleeping Dogs is a blast. It has that arcadey feel, which a lot of people will enjoy. While driving, you can ram cars and try to run them off the road. You can defy physics and do insane drifts. You can also "action hijack" vehicles, which involves you jumping off of your vehicle and jumping onto another. That is one aspect in which Sleeping Dogs borrows from another game as Just Cause also had a similar gameplay element. While driving you can also shoot, which is great and it adds to the gameplay. While shooting in a vehicle you can cause a lot of havoc such as shooting other cars' tires, causing them to go out of control and blowing them up. You start off with a standard motorcycle, which isn't very fast but if you aren't satisfied, you can always get something else. If you aren't satisfied with the car you have, you can always steal another car or buy one from a black market dealer. Once you progress through the story a bit, you unlock races. Racing is enjoyable and races range from racing with average street cars to the high end sport cars. One thing that you might not like is that when you are in tight areas the camera will re-adjust itself making it hard to see and drive. Sleeping Dogs has also has a face level, triad experience and cop experience. Your face level helps you get better bonuses from foods and drinks and a high face level is required if you want to buy some higher end clothes and cars. You can increase your face level by doing favours for others in Hong Kong. Some favours you can do our getting your friend out of trouble with police and taking care of thieves. In Sleeping Dogs you have a triad experience meter which increases when you do crime related things and help out with triad affairs. Once you're triad meter increases, you can unlock some pretty nice melee upgrades. The cop experience meter is for upgrades involving guns and driving. Sleeping Dogs is an open world game but guns aren't always involved but when they are, it is pretty fun to use them. Shooting in Sleeping Dogs is good but not great. It has typical controls for a third person open world game. You aim and shoot with the L2 and R2 triggers. You can do all the general things while shooting such as shooting and taking cover and blind fire while in cover. You can also aim freely and at any part of the body. When you are shooting sometimes time will slow down and you will be able to kill enemies in slow motion which is pretty awesome, this part is similar to the Max Payne series. One gameplay element that really sticks out in Sleeping Dogs is the melee combat. The melee mechanics are similar to Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, which is essentially a great thing. The combat in Arkham City was amazing and it does not disappoint in Sleeping Dogs. The difference is that in Sleeping Dogs, the combat is much more violent and brutal but at a slower pace. Punching is more deadly and efficient but unfortunately it does not have the same pace and rhythm that Arkham City had. Another thing to note is reversing some of your enemies' moves can be difficult at times. For example, it would be hard to counter an enemy's punch, when his allies are all trying to beat you up too. Something that makes Sleeping Dogs stand out from the competition in regards to melee combat is environmental finishers. Some environmental finishers are simple and plain, while others are brutal and bloody. Environmental finishers involve interacting with the environment and they can range from throwing someone into a dumpster to putting an enemy through a fish hook. The mission structure in the game is thankfully varied. Missions are different from one another and it helps keep the experience refreshing. For example, in one mission you'll be cruising through the streets trying to hijack a bus and in another mission you'll be handling a boat and shooting and shredding through other enemy boats. Another fun gameplay aspect in Sleeping Dogs is the free running and parkour part similar to Assassin's Creed. Free running is fun and adds a nice touch to the game. You can use free running when you want to climb something or you want to chase someone. When free running, you will be able to climb over fences and jump off objects. Sound: Whether it is voice acting or music, the sound in the game is top notch. All the voice actors give superb and convincing performances. There are many famous Hong Kong and East Asian actors in Sleeping Dogs such as Edison Chen who plays Jackie and Parry Shen who plays your triad boss, Winston. There is a Hollywood presence as well and you might notice some famous Hollywood actors. The hero, Wei Shen is played by Will Yun Lee, his police superintendent is played by Tom Wilkinson, one of the girlfriends you can have in the game is voiced by Emma Stone and Lucy Lui also voices a character in the game. The music also flows along well with the game. It has a mix of music genres in the game such as Hip Hop and Rap, Rock, some techno music and others. When driving, you can switch through radio stations and change to the music that you want to listen to. The game incorporates the music well when you are in an intense scene such as a car chase. Overall, the sound is terrific. The Verdict: All in all, Sleeping Dogs is a terrific game that anyone who likes action-adventure and open world games should definitely check out. I personally think this is one of the best games of 2012 so far. It is a great experience and is good in every major department such as story, gameplay, graphics and presentation and sound. Sleeping Dogs stumbles upon a few things and borrows quite a bit from other well known games but it still has its own identity and is just a tremendous game. I definitely recommend it. Dragon Age 2 (PS3)
by missfwells - My Experience I purchased Dragon Age: Origins because I heard it was similar to Fable the Xbox game. I was very pleased to find it was similar, I then completed Dragon Age: Origins and just had to get the second one! I absolutely love this game, I just wish they would make some more! I played Dragon Age: Origins ... and Dragon Age 2 straight after each-other, yes I did become slightly addicted to the game! The story-line for this game is good, you get to play multiple characters and at the start you get to chose your own story-line. I always chose the Mage as I prefer to fight with spells that run in and attack with a weapon (I find it more fun). There were parts of the game that became repetitive, a lot of the places were recycled. I don't mind an environment being repeated once or twice, but it happened repeatedly! This did not happen so much in the first game an hopefully they will correct it in the 3rd. - Value for Money - I purchased this game off of eBay for over half of the retail price. - Overall - I recommend you purchase this game, however you should purchase Dragon Age: Origins first because there is a story to follow! Dragon Age: Origins is the better game of the two but they are still both very fun and time-consuming! Exactly what you want in a game. Read the complete review |

I am Alive (PS3)
by sn0zb0z I am a big fan of the Uncharted series and have always liked games such as Tomb Raider Underworld and Prince of Persia which have climbing, fighting and jumping as well as interesting storylines and good controls. So when I saw the trailer for I am Alive I really wanted to play it as it seemed to cover all these points. I was ... disappointed to find out I am alive is a digital game only which is available for download on Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation store. I refuse to pay for a digital game or content (I like to be able to sell my games once I've completed them) and I can't understand why they decided not to bring this game out on disk. I'd happily buy it if it did come out on disk, but as it is I settled for downloading the free trial/demo from the PlayStation Store. Story: --------- I am alive is a survival horror based in America. Most cities have been destroyed after an event and now everyone is struggling to survive. Supplies are low and some people will do anything to survive. You play as a survivor, a man called Adam. The story starts out in his home town as he attempts to find his wife and daughter. Gameplay: -------------- The game starts with a short video explaining how things are, although all you really find out is that this guy who doesn't give a name is trying to survive and has traveled back to his home town after the event. You then learn the basics of climbing, shooting/killing and how to survive. When I first started moving around I found it easy enough to control but it wasn't long before I ran into a rather annoying problem. Invisible boundaries. These are quite common in games, although generally they annoy me less in games now than a few years ago. It's usually clearer where the boundaries are. Either a high wall, a massive drop or small gaps between buildings which are either too small to go down, are dark and obviously go nowhere or after walking into the invisible wall once you know you'll never be able to go between any buildings. However, I was walking along, making my way through vehicles when suddenly I got spun around. It took me a moment to realise why and a few more minutes after that to find out where I should be heading as that looked the only obvious path as I somehow missed the bridge I needed to cross to start with. I was obviously just facing the wrong direction. Still, when I got to the bridge I had to jump and then climb. For some reason he didn't want to jump and I began to wonder if I'd gone the wrong way. After he eventually decided he would jump I began climbing. It didn't help that it didn't tell me what I needed to press to jump and it wasn't until I was in exactly the right place that it told me what button to press for things such as jumping and climbing. He doesn't climb across or jump realistically. Apart from that, the climbing is quite like it is in Uncharted, except that you have to watch your stamina because if it drops to nothing you will fall, whereas in Uncharted you can just hang on forever. It's basically as though you are being timed which on one hand does make it more realistic but on the other hand I wasn't always sure he was going to make it in time because he didn't always like to jump the first time you press the button. Once you've pulled yourself up on a ledge or platform the stamina bar does fill up again very quickly which is nice because you can start climbing again soon after but it does seem a rather pointless feature. All it does it make you feel under pressure to climb quicker than the character usually wants to. Overall, the guy is easy to control, the actions are all simple and stamina and health are easy to see. There's also a map that you bring up on screen so you can see where you are going which is useful (unless perhaps you're very bad at map reading). It also tells you what the objective is which is good. Apart from the video sequences the guy doesn't seem that realistic - although you can't just jump off edges and kill him, if you could you wouldn't feel remotely sorry for doing it. There's nothing that makes you feel connected to the character or sorry for what he's going through in trying to survive. You do find out later on that he has a wife and daughter that he wants to find, but you play for a while before that with no clue why you're doing anything. As you go through the game you find there are items to help you. These items light up to show you are there. You also have objectives that light up to show you where to go or what to do. For example, a weapon and a lock so you know to pick up the weapon and then break the lock on a gate to get through to a new area. Although the place is quite big and there are different areas you feel rather restricted. There's not much freedom to walk around randomly and no real need to. Perhaps if you play on further than I did then you have more freedom or different items you need to find, but it certainly doesn't earlier on and it didn't seem like that was about to change. Although there's no freedom in where you go you do have a choice in the game when it comes to people. You can either help or kill people. This is a nice feature as you can be a good guy or a bad guy, but with the people I meet they either threatened me and I felt I had to either fight or walk away, they attacked me and I had to attack because they were where I needed to be, or they were clearly in trouble and I felt I had to help them. In fact, I felt sorrier for the random people on the street than I did for the character. They at least gave a bit of a back story and you could see them struggling. The lighting is horrible at times and far too bright. The camera angle also seems a bit too far over sometimes. However, generally the camera angle is fine and, apart from it being dull, the lighting is fine so it doesn't ruin the game but it is one of them things that can get annoying. Although there is clearly a story and a seemingly interesting one you don't get to find out much. Something bad happened but it's kept a mystery. I guess the idea is to make you keep playing, but personally I'd prefer to know the reason I'm now trying to survive in such a harsh environment. Some mystery is fine but it would be nice to have some idea of what happened and what to expect, if only to have some motivation for surviving or a connection to the character. Graphics/Audio: -------------------- The graphics are pretty impressive but really dull. Cities may have been destroyed and there may be dust everywhere, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be some colour in the game. It gets boring quickly just looking at the same dull environment. The only time I saw colour was when I was dying and there was red around the screen, but that just reminded me of Uncharted. If you think about it the use of colour for that doesn't make sense. Obviously it is meant to be blood, which you do see in Uncharted, but in this game you don't, so if anything the screen should just start to go black or white because if you black out or faint everything is more likely to lose colour rather than turn red. The title screen and loading screen have eerie music which sets the mood for the game. After that it goes silent until you reach a camera and hear a guys voice. The guy sounds how you would expect, there's nothing really special about him, he's just an ordinary guy. When the actual game starts you hear the guy say odd comments and there is some music in the background, still a rather eerie sound, but it's very quiet so I didn't really notice it while playing. In fact, I had to check if there was any music before writing this. However, now I know there is music it will probably annoy me as it is repetitive. There are sound effects, such as water, which are realistic and do add to the game, but background noises do seem to be limited. There's nothing wrong with the audio that is in the game but there's nothing that stands out about it. Price/Download: ---------------------- The game costs £11.99 from the PlayStation store or you can download the trial for free. The trial download is 1953mb. It took about half an hour to download and about 5 minutes to install, which isn't too bad in my opinion. I expected it to take longer. Overall: ----------- Overall I'm quite disappointed by the game as it could have been so much better. I certainly won't be paying out the £11.99 for the full digital copy. If it did ever come out on disk I'd probably pick up a copy, although I'm still not sure I'd be willing to pay £11.99 for it and I certainly wouldn't pay the £30+ that most new releases cost. The game has its good points and I'd certainly recommend downloading the free trial and giving it a try, but I can't really recommend buying it. Read the complete review |
