Aliens Vs Predator (PS3)
Advantages: Fast paced, fun game
Disadvantages: Difficulties with on-line play, maybe too easy
This review is of the Playstation 3 game, "Aliens vs Predator" developed by Rebellion Developments and released in early 2010. They also developed the PC game of the same name in the late 1990s.
As a quick backdrop for those that don't know, Aliens and Predator were both big films nearly thirty years ago, but a film was later made, and many games made across different consoles, which brought the two different films together into a contest between the two forces.
In this game there are three different missions, and these form the three different types of way in which you can play the game. You can play either as the aliens, as the predators or as the marines. If you're playing in single player mode, which I tend to do as I'm not the greatest of games players and will only otherwise lose, you work through these three different mission types.
There are differences in how you play in each of the three missions, they are set at slightly different times, and there are different strengths for each character. So for example, the aliens are very agile, but the predators have numerous weapons and tools which they can use, such as cannon and the wrist blades.
In terms of playing the game, it's fast paced and it takes some time to get used to the controls and the way in which you play the different characters. The game might well be too easy for some, I finished the three missions in single player mode in less than twenty hours, and I'm not that good at games, so someone more skilled and able is likely to complete it much quicker. For me the marines section was the toughest, but this wasn't too straining.
The graphics in the game are perfectly adequate, but given the hit nature of this title, I had expected them to be better. Some don't like the sound in this game, but I thought it was superb, there are some brilliant sound effects which come from the film, and also entertaining background music which goes alongside that. The sound especially added to the atmosphere of the game.
There is a strong multiplayer element in the game, and a number of different modes which you can play in, such as predator hunt, survivor and death match. My favourite was infection, where one of the players is randomly tagged as an alien, the rest as marines, and the alien has to try and infect the marines. These modes all add some length to the game, but there are problems with the connection system.
On-line play against other gamers isn't particularly important to me personally, but it is of course a feature which is really important to some gamers. This game really struggles with this, it's quite hard to make a connection to other players, it takes a long time, and makes larger games rather difficult and complex. This isn't a problem that I've experienced with other games. Also, when you are connected, there seem to be real problems with lag and connections which are dropped. This certainly takes away from the gameplay somewhat!
The game was released new recently for 49.99 pounds, which is rather a steep price for many people to have to pay. However, fortunately, Amazon are selling the game at the time of writing for just under 25 pounds, and if you're happy with a second hand copy, these can be found at the moment for around fifteen to twenty pounds on sites such as eBay and Amazon. Hopefully though these prices will come down soon ane make the game more accessible to those on lower budgets.
In summary, this game is OK and passes the time, but it isn't the massive hit that many expected it to be. Reviews of the game are generally quite average, although some people love the game, and of course, some hate it. There is limited replay value, unless you want to discover all the hidden items, and it's quite an expensive game to buy. Unless you're a great fan of Aliens vs Predator, it might be best to wait for the price of the game to fall a bit before purchasing it, or even consider renting it.
Summary: An expensive game, not as good as many hoped
