After giving the newest Call of Duty (Modern Warfare 2) an extensive playthrough, I felt a need to return to the older-school of the series, so popped in Call of Duty 3, a good game that, while probably the worst in the series, is still a very fun FPS. Once again the game is set in World War 2, with you aiming to take down the evil Nazi force.
Those familiar with the previous games will notice that nothing has changed: the controls are intuitive, meaning even someone who has never played an FPS will be able to get to grips with them quickly. The missions always hold your hand and let you know what to do, but this really helps keep the pacing brisk, and even if by now the whole WW2 thing is a bit shopworn, it is still executed cinematically. My only complaint is that, like CoD2, there are probably a few too many missions, as it gets a bit long in the tooth by the time the credits roll around.
Visually, the game was a great launch title to show off the PS3's graphical capabilities, with the environments being gorgeously detailed and the characters being rendered extremely well. Also so much of the scenery is now destructible, meaning you can have some fun while mowing down the bad guys. Aurally, the game shines too, for the gun sounds are incredibly loud and effective, and the screams of your teammates also add to the immersion factor.
The online offering undoubtedly pales to the brilliant multiplayer of the recent games, but it was a nice addition that had you jumping into Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag games as either the Allies or the Axis. Also there were different "classes" as has been made popular in recent years, and the maps are very well designed.
It's a testament to the quality of these games that this is the "worst" of the lot, because it's still very good!
I brought this game as I wanted a FPS when I first brought my Playstation 3. Some reviews said the game was great but others said the game should be missed. However, I think the game is good but not as good as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The game has some good points but has some problems.
The graphics are ok but not much different from the PS2 version. They are really bad compared to other PS3 games. The game has no slowdown so runs very smooth.
The gameplay is very fun as you play through the WW2 missions on the Normandy Breakout. This is very historic and the game tells the story well. The game also helped me learn abit of history.
The online was good but nobody plays online anymore making it useless for online. However, if you can get some mates together it is very good and the maps are large. It does have some lag but not many, the maps are very good.
The game is very good but experiences some slowdown in some areas. The game is very good overall, but the graphics are very poor. In some ways, I prefer this to COD4 as it includes vechiles and even uses the Sixaxis to melee. It can be picked up for cheap now so it is a great buy!
Genre: First person shooter
Number of players offline:1
Number of players online:24
Call of Duty is a great first person shooter on the PS3 set in World war 2. You fight the enemy all over Europe hoping to defest them in many diffrent locations. This game is the follow up of Call of Duty 1 and Call of duty 2 and is the best in my opinion by far! With great graphics and great multiplayer facilities on the playstation network. This game really has come along way since Call of Duty 1!
Single Player Campaign:
In the single player campaign you follow the British across france and other varies other europeans hoping to defeat the enemy. It is an action packed campaign with lots of mission and a great selection of guns. In the simgle player campaign yo do not get a choice of gun or character but you can pick up weapons from the many fighters across the battlefields. The single player is relatively easy but is really great fun and very realistic. although there is no blood on the injured soldiers on this game but never the less it is a great simgle player campaign.
The online multiplayer facilties are the highlight of the game for me. You can choose from 9 diffrent maps:
Verdun:Is a castle with several trenches and tunnels around the area!
Mayenne:Is another castle but unlike Verdun this map is set very much inside whilst Verdun is staged outside.
Rouen:This is a typical French town which has been bombed by the emeny making very much a wreckage, this makes it great for being a sniper.
Merville:It has two bases each end of the battlefield with lots of rather odd ruins in the middle.
Eder Dam:It is like the map name explains it is a dam with a bridge running over the top of it and through it is inside the bridge making it great for action packed battles. This is a very big map.
poisson:This is a great map with lots of spaces to roam up and down with a tank. my personal favourite.
Les Ormes which is another French town with to barns on either sides making it great for games like capture the flag and war.
Argentan:This map is a set in a forest with little huts for protection from the enemy. A great map for the snipers amongst you.
Fuel Plant:Which is a big map set in a fule plant with varies locations for sniping.
These maps are all very fun and enjoyable. When you have selected your map you choose from the five diffrent game modes:
Online game Types:
war:Where you battle for strategic points on the map.
Capture the flag:Where you attempt to capture the enemies flag and return it to your base.
Single player capture the flag:Where you try and capture one flag.
Battle:where you fight alone fighting to get the highest score out of your opponents.
Team battle:Where you fight with a team to get the highest amount of points.
after you have selected your map and mode and entered a game you then choose a team Axis or Allies, both teams have diffrent weapons and grenades but no team is better than the other because they all have the same infantry types. After you have completed this you then choose your infantry class,
Rifeman, light assault, heavy assault, medic, scout and anti armour. All of the have diffrent weapons and diffrent special abilities such as the medic can heal members of his team and the scout can call artillery strikes.
When you have completed all these processes you try to kill as many emenies as possible to get the highest points, if you get a certain number of points you then up grade class , still being the same infantry type you get more ammo and grenades. You will get extra points for capturing the flag and reviving team mates. You also try and complete the objectives.
There are also 3 vehicles which help you get across the battlefield quicker. These are motor bikes, a car with a turret and a tank!
The online multiplayer is really great playing with a maximum of 24 players including yourself. You can also choose host your own game and choose how long the game is and how many points is the target.
There are a few disadvantages which have made me give a 4 instead of 5 these include not being able to play multiplayer offline. This is a bit disappointing because the XBOX-360 has this feature and the PS3 version would have been great with it. Also the network is a bit slow sometimes making it difficult to connect to the hosts games. Another disadvantage is that there is no headset facilties or ways to chat to each other in the game so you have to arrange the game on the playstation xmb. other than these minor inconvienences the game is great!!
