Advantages: Excellent game play, online gaming facility
Disadvantages: Disconnects during game
Unfortunately for the past few weeks I have not been too well, this has meant a lot of rest on the couch after watching my husband playing all of his games on the Playstation 3 I decided this was something I wanted to have a go at.
I have to admit I do not have the best co-ordination when it comes to using the control and after playing this game a lot more I have to say that it has improved.
Anyway back to the main purpose of the review and the game I just can't get enough of.
Being of the female gender I am expecting to get a few comments that women should not be allowed to play this game....why do I say this? Well when I play the game online some of the comments are a little abusive and its the only part that ruins it for me.
*~*The Storyline*~*
Call of Duty 4 or COD4 for abbreviation purposes in this review is an action game and can be used in single player mode, multiplayer or you can connect and play online.
In the single player mode you will enter the game as Sergeant "Soap" McTavish a member of the SAS and you will briefly complete training exercises before completing the missions set at each level.
I felt this part was a little short and only really touched on some of the basics so I found having never played any of the previous COD versions I did struggle to get use to some of the controls.
As the game begins you find yourself onboard an enemy cargo ship and your task is to eliminate the crew and gain evidence that there are nuclear weapons onboard when the ship comes under attack and you and your crew need to leave before the ship sinks. You need to ensure that you obtain the cargo manifest to pass the level.
We soon learn that a Russian Ultranationalist group is liasing with a rebel in the Middle East and they plan to revolt against the government by seizing nuclear weapons. Imran Zakhaev is the main character in the story along with Khaled Al -Asa who is the rebel leader.
Sergeant Paul Jackson is part of the US Marines and they are deployed to the Middle East to monitor the actions of the rebels and later in the game you take on the role of this character when he experiences a flashback and this takes us back to when they first tried to bring down the rebel.
Captain Price is a great character that guides you through all the levels of the game advising you where to go and what to do, as well as verbally advising you of his instruction, subtitles are also displayed on the screen along with a compass to direct you to where you need to go to enable the game to follow on, this is when you may need to take the lead to secure a checkpoint and to near completion of the level. Each time you reach a check point the game is save to prevent you from having to start the level from the beginning all over again.
The Brits and the Americans work together to try and out the rebels and stop their revolt against the government.
Each level is more challenging and involve you using and improving on new skills which will help when you connect online.
*~*Playing Online*~*
This is my favourite part of the game offering you the opportunity to play against other members around the world as you score points you quickly move up in rank.
Adding this feature to the game ensures real longevity as you can play for hours and despite the single player game mode being really short you can replay and play the harder level which is extremely challenging I haven't tried this yet but my husband has and states it is very hard.
The online version offers you the chance to create a class once you get to a certain rank and along with this comes certain perks such as a silencer, camouflage and smoke grenades.
If you manage to get 3 kills in a row then you can make use of the online radar which will alert you to all the other online players and their locations which can help to increase your kill streak and if you get to a 5 kill streak you can call in air support and if you get to a 7 kill streak you can call in a helicopter which will shoot down your enemies.
Overall this game offers great entertainment, the visual aspect is excellent and the storyline makes the game much more intense.
The graphics are outstandingly realistic and you really can lose yourself in the game.
The only downside to the online connection that I have so far encountered is the loss of connection that I sometimes experience during the game play which can lead to me missing out on a higher points score.
Other than that this is an excellent game and really shows the playstation 3 up for the excellent games system it really is and the high definition picture quality offers a clear, concise picture throughout the game.
Summary: An excellent game that should be in every serious gamers collection

- 31/10/08 I still play CoD4 online and I've had this for a year now. That's probably the most time I've spent in a game. A true classic. |
