Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3)
Advantages: Amazing Gameplay, Experience System
Not being a fan of FPS I let this title pass me by for about a year, thinking that all the hype surrounding it must have been created by all those delusioned First Person Shooter junkies. This was until I happened to be at a friends house when he stuck it on and let me see what it was like. Please not that this review only covers online aspects of the game.
This is without a doubt the best online gaming experience you can get on either the PS3 or Xbox 360. Let me explain a little about it:
There are many game modes that you will be familiar with already if you have played any online FPS; Death Match, Team Deathmatch, Attack & Defend etc. There are some others though which may not be as common, such as the Cage matches and hardcore modes among others. There is a good selection of maps also, about 8 I think, most of which are very good, and everyone has one or two favourites. The gun and accessories also seem quite varied.
At this point you must be wondering what exactly sets this game apart from the hordes of other ones, as nothing I've mentioned so far jumps out as being cutting edge. Quite simply what makes COD4 so brilliant is 2 different things; the gameplay, and the experience system.
The gameplay is amazing, controls very responsive, online servers reliable and in-game rarely laggy. Never have I played a FPS that is simply as much of a joy to play. You also get some cool reinforcements if you get kill streaks. 3 Kills gives you radar view of all enemies, 5 kills gives you an airstrike, and 7 kills gets you a helicopter gunner come down and help you out for a minute or so. Its amazing when you get them
The experience system is awesome; you get experience points (XP) for making kills and winning games etc. These points allow you to 'level-up' much like an RPG. You start on level 1, and it goes all the way to 55. As you level up you unlock new abilities (called 'Perks,' an example being the ability to take more bullets before dying, or the ability to eavesdrop on enemy comms), new weapons, and new game modes. Additionally, certain targets are set for you in terms of accuracy and headshots for each weapon, which will unlock new weapon attachments. This experience system gives it an addictive nature similar to that of grinding in World of Warcraft (you want to keep playing and playing to level up and get those sweet unlockables), but unlike WoW its fun as you go, as you get to enjoy the great gameplay.
Summary: Go and buy this game now!
