Advantages: Gameplay, action, graphics and online
Disadvantages: Too hard online for casual players
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is quite simply the best game of its kind that I have ever played. As a huge fan of the series, I currently own all Call of duty games from 2 onwards and feel I am well qualified to judge this release.
First of all, it is important to note that, for the first time, Activision have gone away from old fashioned war from the early 20th century in favour of modern war, hence the title. This opens up all kinds of new tactical elements that uses technology not seen in previous versions. I am usually not one for heavy tactics in shooting games but, as with everything in this series, it works really well.
All of the great gameplay elements are in there from the previous games. The action, the suspense and the graphics are all there in their usual glory and perhaps even surpass previous efforts in terms of depth of field and shear action going on at the same time with no loss of framerate whatsoever.
The single player again revolves around campaigns, but hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. These missions start off easier and get a lot tougher as you go along, the standard kind of thing really, but be warned as even the early levels, set on normal difficulty, are really long and can take some doing for casual players like myself. I am yet to finish the game so cannot comment on the latter levels, but the variety I have experienced so far is superb and well worth the money.
The number of weapons and little extras that you can use in this game will really blow your mind and it certainly did with me. I don't think I will ever use half of them as the choice is just too much and my fingers aren't quick enough in the heat of the moment.
Of course, all game fans will know where Call of Duty games really excel and that is online in multiplayer action. I am delighted to say the Modern Warfare follows on from where previous versions left off in terms of online options and adds to this with all new modes to keep the interest and variety going. I have experienced little or no lag problems either which is crucial to enjoying online action as fast and frantic as this. I would have loved to have seen some more game rooms where it is solely for beginners as I rarely last 2 minutes without being killed in almost all game worlds I have entered.
To summarise, despite no longer being the latest Call of Duty, I do believe having now gone back to this that it is just simply the best.
Summary: The top game of this genre
