Dirt 3 (PS3)
Advantages: Great fun, good physics and enjoyable career mode
Disadvantages: Not for the serious player, not as good as WRC
I am a huge fan of racing games on the PS3, anything thats a challenge rather than a gimmick for the serious racer. I don't like children's racing games with no realism but i love hardcore racing games for the more experienced player. This is a bit of both. It's a funny and enjoyable "mess around" game when it comes to gymkhana and battersea stunt park but then becomes a serious racing game on the long trials and online races. Particularly in the snow when the games physics really shine.
The crashes are very realistic too when barrel rolling through the air at 100 mph. For instance, you wouldn't bounce off walls if you crashed at that speed into a concrete pipe in real life, you'd fall flat on the floor like a pancake, and in other racers you get that annoying bounce, in Dirt it's a different story. Snow is very different from the dirt trails and that just shows the level of detail gone into making this game without having the over protective assists and difficulty levels.
Platinum medals are damn near impossible to get and bronze medals are still possible after having 8 crashes and a quick break while reading the sunday times... Im exaggerating of course but this is how it should be, very lenient easy medals right to another extreme of being nearly impossible with everything in-between. Perfect. You don't even select a difficulty level like other racing or rallying games, your medal at the end will reflect your performance making the game tailored to your skill. You race as hard or as slow as you want.
The graphics and sound are not at all what i'd expect from a serious racing game like Forza on the Xbox 360 and that's what makes this a half serious half relaxed game. The sound is unrealistic and it seems like most cars have no different engine noises between them, they all rev with the same noise, and crash with the same impact noise. On a home cinema surround system its pointless and really makes no difference. In HD though this is spectacular, particularly in the close up cam when watching your movie clip back in the theater.
Overall a fun game for the less experienced racer but hardcore rally racers will be displeased by the gimmicks and laid back attitude to the game. In which case i would recommend WRC for you which is a very serious racing/rallying game for the more experienced player without the gymkhana and side games.
Summary: Less serious players buy this, hardcore racers buy WRC
