When this was released I was impressed at how different it was to the standard first person shooter. The controls may be essentially based on Call of Duty but this one has really fun elements thrown into the mix. Right from the beginning you can tell that the game is trying to be scary by knocking over items around you occasionally and flashing images etc (knowledge of the games predecessors is advisable but not 100% essential) all supposedly to make you jump, all written in the script. It doesn't exactly creep you out but nice try. The fact the campaign is essentially co-op is a decent idea. 2 characters available, both quite different to suit your style. You've got the guy who doesn't say anything and puts everything in slow-motion, acquiring all kinds of fire-arms and generally beating any opposition in the face. Then there's his demented brother who uses the bodies of enemy troops to do his bidding, using psychic powers to hold and throw enemies. It is particularly fun in my own opinion to steal and gib/self-destruct the body you are in, especially after the cheeky, snigger laugh from your character as he steals them. It never gets old.
Enemies range from your standard swat team with assault rifles to super soldiers with teleporting capabilities and demons who like to play with knives. Game environments also vary quite well featuring; broken down houses in suburbia, decrepit derelict factories, dusty shadow ridden cowboy towns, large real life monument bridges with large scale mech battles. The story isn't that fantastic but there are decent cut-scenes, good maps and generally fun gameplay with the gradually tougher and varied enemies, newer weapons and even giant mechs to control. Level review is a nice touch as well, revealing who got the most points, levelling up by completing the accomplishments and being dubbed the 'favourite son' - points are gained by completing tasks and meeting prerequisites within levels such as using specific abilities a number of times, finding and sharing/stealing souls/points from dead bodies scattered throughout all the levels - to encourage gameplay variety.
So its not really scary that much (apart from perhaps inside a factory during a blackout when you get mobbed by numerous goblin guys wielding butcher knives) , you don't 'really' need to have played the first two games and its a fun alternative to the standard first person shooters being released non stop.
This game is utterly fantastic and really great FPS that included chilling horror and suspense while being a premium action title! The story of the game consists of an arms facility that has been overtaken by a number of clones controlled by a mind-controller called Paxton Fettal. You are tasked in killing Paxton while trying to take down the other evil force called Alma. This is a very psychologically messed up game!
The gameplay takes place inside the facility, with you acting as 'the pointman', in a team that infiltrates the facility. You have the special ability to be able to slow down time, giving your precious second to kill off your enemies in a quick fashion. You have a wide access to a large variety of weapons including pistols, shotguns, assault rifles and grenades. Pistols have the ability to shoot quick and accurately, while assault rifles give you a fully automated weapon, that can tear enemies apart, but aren't that powerful per shot. You face off against a variety of enemies including invisible types to robots!
Graphics are ported from the PC, with a 3 year old game still holding up all these years later. The fact you needed a monster PC at the time of its release, shows that this game has great graphics. This ranges from the lighting to the character models. The load times however for the PS3 are ridiculous and it takes forever to load up each level
Online: This is a great mode and all the weapons and some locations are included from the game. The gimmick is that you can collect a power-up that slows down other players instead of yourself. This leads to a frantic rush!
Initially optimistic about buying this game, I decided to rent it first. This turned out to be a rather smart move on my part as the game is somewhat short.
Don't let that put you off though, the game itself is definately worth a play. Playing through a rather unique storyline certain events unfold leading to a rather dramatic climax.
The game plays off your senses as the title "FEAR" so likely makes you guess. While playing your way through various levels against gun brandishing mercenaries there is something more sinister at hand.
The story is scary in a sense that it makes you jump, having played it rather late probably didn't help that but there are a few instances where you will jump and it's not when you typically expect it.
The game is not violently gruesome but definately deserves the rating that it has been given and advisable to stick to that age rating as it may scare the children.
There is an online option, however it is not as popular as other games and is not as organised so it's really just a single player game.
Having said that and bearing in mind the shortness of it, the game itself is definately worth a rent or a buy from the pre-owned section.
This game in my opinion is a bit dull. There isn't much going on its just in the pitch black killing lots of aliens. If you like the dark, horror like shooters its probably for you but in my opinion i didn't like it and found it way to hard. Such as your gun runs out of bullets ever so quickly if you do not save up bullets!
The online is very boring waiting for the game to start as you have to wait for a lot of players for the host to start the game but when you get online with it, it is quite good but not as good as games like call of duty 3!
Action guns horror guts is what this game has to offer. So far I would say this was the second best game I have played on the ps3 (first being godfarther).
Compare this game to resistance of man and itwalks all over it. The movement is convincing, when you shoot someone it actualy looks like they have just been hit, shoot a person in the leg and watch them fall down and stumble back up.
What is so important about the movement and realism of this game is that it make it feel like you are in the game, you will find youself trying to see round corners or not wanting to go into a room because you are actually to scared to go in.
The horror element of this game is also very effective and convincing a bit silent hill ish.
Thank you we actually are starting getting some great games for the ps3 even if we had to look to old pc games to get them (by the way this game doesn't feel like an old game)
BUY IT! ITS WORTH IT.
