Advantages: Brilliantly non-linear gameplay and quick load times

Quick note: this is one of the few games that I actually own on three platforms (PC, PS3 and the dreaded Xbox). I have therefore tailored each review accordingly, although my feelings about this game are largely the same.

Ok, let's not beat about the bush: this is Oblivion set in the future. instead of dungeons and dragons, you have nuclear shelters and mutants. it's a classic re imagining.

bethesda (the designers) have retained the same RPG engine as the Elder Scrolls series, which you will either love or hate. essentially, you can still choose to be good or bad, and you do have plenty of autonomy over your character.

the beauty of bethesda games is the free roaming, non linear approach. you really can do what you want, and don't have to follow the main story. however, you will probably want to in fallout as the plot is brilliant.

the graphics are predictably stunning, and the sound effects erie and haunting. the real twist to this game is the retro 1950s world design. music is old school, and the fonts are reminiscent of US cold war propaganda. it's a great contrast with the bleak ravaged landscapes.

The best thing about playing this on the PS3 is the smooth loading times between location transitions. There are times (for example when you exit a tunnel to the outside world) where a load screen will appear, but otherwise it all happens discretely in the background.
