Advantages: This game will suck you in and never spit you out.
Disadvantages: None, other than singing in your sleep...
Fallout 3 is an RPG/FPS by Bethesda (the creators of the elder scrolls RPG games). Set in post-apocalyptic Washington DC, this game is a world away from the elves and magic of Bethesda's other games in location, visuals, plot and game-play, despite being built around the same engine as the critically acclaimed Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Countless other reviewers will give details of the plot, I will gloss over it in favour of other details.
You are the lone wanderer, a small insignificant individual who will have a huge impact on the world around you, which can be good, bad or neutral depending on in game play and choices. The huge variation in how you can play and end this game make it one you will play over and over and over...
Visually, the game has dull muted colours suited to a land which has been destroyed by war. The graphics are superb, you will find yourself changing the camera angle to view your character often. The structures you will encounter are made of a limited list of walls and floors but have been built in such a way that every building you enter will feel unique. The day/night lighting effects and the sky are second to none, and add to the atmosphere as well as effecting the ease of game play.
The voices of the main characters are well scripted and executed. The characters with just a few lines have enough variation to stop you getting bored of them, and battle cries add well to fights.
The music is 50's, as is much of the architecture despite the fact this is a futuristic game with much technology, seemingly it is set in an alternate reality. This choice in decade adds warm familiarity to the game and obviously is suitable due to the nuclear war theme. One thing to note though-you can listen to the radio in game (with a limited playlist). If you do so, you WILL be singing the songs in your sleep!
Bethesda have breathed life into this series, without getting rid of the things that make Fallout unique. They have obviously listened to their fans.
