Advantages: Huge open world, highly addictive, very creative.
Disadvantages: Often Limited ammo source.
The first thing that hits you about Fallout 3 is the scale of the open world. The game is brilliant in the fact that there is such a wide variety of quests, and side missions for you to complete, and so much open world for you to explore.
Fallout 3 is a mix between a First Person Shooter (FPS) and a role Playing Game (RPG). The basic storyline is that a nuclear war erupted, causing people to take shelter in underground Vaults to avoid the destruction of planet earth. Everyone who is born in the vault will live and die in the vault. Until, through a series of events, you have the opportunity to escape from Vault 101 and roam post apocalyptic Washington, in search for your father and any other signs of life. Near the end of the main quest, you will have explored a large amount of the capital wasteland, and will hopefully have been enlightened about the whereabouts of your father, his experiences and his situation (I don't want to ruin the storyline for those who haven't finished the game).
Unfortunately some of these signs of life, aren't very friendly. Some of the vast amount of creatures mutated by the radiation are really quite gross, including a 'Human Crab' type thing which fires poison balls out of its mouth...
Now down to the true business. What is the game actually like to play?
The answer is: 'Truly amazing'
The graphics are slick and almost too realistic in parts, brilliantly depicting the landscape of post-apocalyptic Washington. There are a variety of weapons, even some that you can make yourself by collecting the right parts scattered across the landscape. Weapons ranging from the humble baseball bat to mini guns and the 'fat man' mini nuke gun.
Throughout the game, you have opportunities to gain more experience in specific areas of expertise. To grow levels you must complete quests or kill people/creatures. Each time you do so, you will gain Experience points, all contributing to your overall level. Each time you grow a level, you are given a limited amount of points which you can add to specific skills, a few including; Lock picking, Hand Combat, Small Guns, Big Guns etc.
Each of these skills will effect what opportunities and advantages you have in the wastelands. Each skill will be useful in their own situation and way.
The controls are perfect, providing smooth game-play, and easy aiming and shooting. This isn't a strict 'run and gun' game, you have to use tactics and skill in parts to obliterate the horrible creatures and other humans.
Another major part of Fallout 3 is being careful about the amount of ammunition that you use on enemies. Unfortunately there will be many points in the game where you run out of ammunition which leaves you in a really awkward situation. Do you run at the big scary monster with a baseball bat, or run and get chased down? Even when you kill some enemies with guns of their own, they rarely drop large amounts of ammunition. The game forces you to learn which guns to use on different kinds of enemies, for example; you may wish to use a knife on a 'mole rat' rather than a shotgun.
Overall, I would rate this game a 9/10, purely for the reason that it is brilliant and will keep you entertained for hours on end. It shows a gritty and almost horrific portrait of a fallen world. I just can't get enough of this game, it is a definite must-have if you are a fan of shooters or RPGs.
Summary: A truely spectacular game, a must-have!
