miss this one out and head straight to Fifa 09

Fifa 08, an installment in the fifa family that you can afford to miss out on. Although it is the game that pushed it up and away from rivals PES it was certaintly no match for the following game fifa '09 which was released the following year.

It was the game that changed everything for fifa giving plenty of new modes and features and boasting its first real atempt to join the other big names in the online community.

Of course all the same old features are there, looking for a quick mess about with some mates use the same old quickplay, looking to follow, manage and play your favourite team to greatness this is also possible in the season box. But this was the first game where you could use the feature "Be A Pro" to follow one player and hone your football skills with him. It also really took of in the online section allowing you to play anyone in the world at a match of foootball.

But it was completly outshadowed by what followed Fifa '09 did not try bringing anymore new features to the game but instead worked on improving the ones bought in by Fifa '08 it has stunning visuals and a far superior camera angle that improves the quality of the fifa family so if looking to buy a fifa game get fifa 09 onwards rather than this prototype.

A good football game & well worth the money. Die Hards might wait for Fifa 2010

So, why didn't you buy Fifa 09 I hear you ask? Well with me being the tight yorkshireman that I am, when I say this game preowned from Gamestation for £2.49 (yes, that's the right price I haven't missed a number) I thought I would buy it.

I love sports games. They are my favourite kind. I can quite happily play them again & again. But only if they're good.

Firstly this game has a lot to offer. 1 - 7 players can play the game in the same room simlultaniously (although 7 pads at £35 each would be awfully expensive). There is a manager mode that you can play for season after season. Online network play for 2-8 players (although I haven't tried this yet). It has the most teams ever up to this game. 30 leagues from all over the world, 23 real stadiums & every single team from the English football league comprising the Premier League, Coca Cola Championship, League 1 & League 2. I didn't think I'd be playing as my hometown Rotherham United.

It plays pretty well. It isn't perfect but it is more than passable. It is very easy to pick up the controls & you will be scoring good goals within a few games. The things that I would say could do with improvement are Artificial Intelligence of you own players (though not the other team). Plus sometimes it doesn't pass to the player you think you were aiming at & it goes to a different player who might be marked. I will say that this is bearing in mind I mainly play as a league 2 team, so the fact that they could be better & the odd pass goes astray is probably realistic!

I you want a football game for PS3, you have 2 option. This or Pro Evo. I haven't played Pro Evo on the PS3 so I can't compare them properly. I will say this. Bearing in mind Fifa 2010 is due out in 2 months, for the price you will pay for a copy of this game, you won't be dissapointed & you'll more than get you moneys worth out of it.

For a footie fan this is a must have

This might be an older game, but it really represents great value for money. I picked this up with my son for £4.99 pre-owned from Gamestation. (Quick tip, if they have more than one copy, check the DVD quality, as the first one they gave us was scratched, the second perfect).

This game really is best played with a friend. It is very easy to set up a quick match, very fast to load and the controls can be simple, until you get used to playing. 'X' to tackle, 'O' to shoot, 'X' to pass, thumb stick to move, 'R2' to run, is all you need to get going. Then as you gain experience, you can learn more buttons like through pass, lob shot, switching players, tricks etc.

Graphics are very effective and shows just how much console games have improved over the last couple of years. The sound is equally as impressive, especially when pushed through a 5.1 amplifier. The crowd cheers, you get whistles, great commentary, very enjoyable.

For a footie fan this is a must have.

      Great Football Game

'FIFA '08' continues EA Sports' long running football franchise - but with FIFA '09 recently released, it it worth spending less on this older incarnation of the game instead?.

I've played this particular version (PS3) and also the Wii and Xbox 360 editions, so i'm able to compare the game on all three platforms.

FIFA games don't really change that much from year to year, generally featuring minor graphical updates and gimmicky new features - but how does the 2008 game compare to its competitors?

Graphically, the in-game visuals are excellent, and pretty much identical to the Xbox 360 version. Whilst they still wouldn't fool anyone into thinking they were watching real televised action, they have improved vastly from the waxy-faced player models seen in the earlier FIFA outings. That said, player close-ups still look a bit shiny - especially noticeable if you're playing the game with a Hi-Def Setup.

Gamers can be very picky, and generally those who play football games are either FIFA or 'PES' (Pro-Evolution Soccer) fans. There are those who often want a FIFA vs PES debate - but both games have their own strengths and weaknesses, and it just depends on what you prefer - both are great football experiences, but Fifa is generally more realistic, and PES is a more 'arcadey' than its competitor.

Due to the increased realism, in FIFA, the emphasis is on thinking and slow build-up play - you can't just run forward in an all out attack or you'll lose the ball quickly. This system works well, and you have to deliberate over placed passes and begin looking for gaps in the play.

Nine out of ten times, a pass will arrive at the intended target - but frustratingly, there will be an occasion where the game decides to randomly pass the ball to the nearest player, even if you're not aiming at him. Thankfully, this only occurs rarely, and generally the controls work well. Ball physics are excellent - especially the way a deflected cross can end up in the defenders net, which adds a fun element to proceedings.

Again this year, there's the obligatory tiredness bar which is displayed each time a player has the ball. This drains down every time a run is made and adds realism - meaning you can't just hold down the sprint button all game long and have an unfair advantage.

In single player mode, the difficulty has been noticeably toned up. It can be tricky (compared to other FIFA's) to score many goals, even on the easier settings. This isn't really a problem, again adding realism - but in the past it was fun to be able to score 15 or 20 goals in a match.

Multiplayer is where the FIFA franchise is traditionally most fun, and it is here too. There are a good variety of online options, and the ability to play a 2 vs 2 game on one console.

Provided by Andy Gray and Martin Tyler, the in-game commentary is quite good, but soon gets repetitive - comments like "the power and pace of Patrcick Viera", made almost every time he touches the ball, can quickly get annoying. Overall though, FIFA 'O8 is great fun to play - but a few people will find it slow. This will be especially apparent if you've just finished playing PES. However, for graphical qualities and realism, give FIFA '08 a go.

FIFA '08 for the PS3 costs £17.98 - cheaper than many sports games as it's not the latest incarnation of the franchise.

Loved the game and everyone I know did aswell

It is a very good game if you are online or against mates as it makes it more fun, Good gameplay, Good music. The songs are all good songs that everyone likes to listen to. The graphics are really good and the game players actually look exactly like them, even players from lower leagues look quite similar. I liked this game and I think most people that like football would aswell. But this game is not only for those who love football but its also good for those who like to have a laugh with their mates. This game is the best 'Fifa' game ever and against all the other consoles this game is better than ever and back with updated players and teams, Cristiano Ronaldo is an amazing player on it as he is in real life and you truly experience the game as though you are in control.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          Worth £40

FIFA 08 is the only football game in consideration (with the exception of Euro 08, which is a commendable halfway-house for FIFA and Pro Evo fans). I believe that this is the case as the graphics are second to none and the gameplay takes skill and is exciting. There is the thrill of pacing it down the wing with the unstoppable Cristiano Ronaldo, hammering the ball into the back of the net on the end of a driven cross, or purely messing about with a player of your choice in the arena whilst you're waiting for your game to load. Use variations in pace, silky changes of direction or the extrovert and aptly named Trick Stick to beat your opponent. In my opinion the online play is the best part of the game, but manager mode is certainly entertaining and offers new challenges, especially with created players. Very good game!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            Best football game ever created.

Since the late 90s and certainly up to this year, the Pro Evolution Soccer series had taken over from FIFA as the dominant force in console football games.

I have always remained commited to owning FIFA games as i am a fan of the licensing the game has and found Pro Evolution too cartoony looking and all the fake players and teams annoyed me. As an Aston Villa fan i would much rather play with Aston Villa than as Pro Evolution Soccer calls it "West Midlands Village".

Is my review of this game therefore bias, i dont believe so as from playing the games with several friends who were avid PES fans, the consensus that this is a truly great game was reached by all.

I am pleased to say that this year FIFA 08 has raised the bar and is without doubt the greatest football game ever created.

The graphics on the PS3 console for this game especially when running through a HDMI cable are absolutely superb.

There are thousands and thousands of fully licensed teams, players and kits as well as a large selection of international, recognisable stadiums.

The gameplay is completely different to that of previous FIFA's and feels slower at first. This adds to the realism of the game as the movements of the players are almost perfection. The range of passing, shooting and dribbling styles are amazing and you can put great passing routines together with a bit of practice at the game.

There are many different game modes for you to get your teeth into. The manager mode on the game is truly excellent as it is very addictive and like a seperate game in itself. There are also many league and cup tournaments to do from around the world as well as obviously friendly games and an extensive online mode.

It also has the be a pro mode where you contol just one singular player on the pitch. Upon playing this, i can see how it could be good with playing with a lot of friends but personally i am not a fan of this side of the game.

Online you can compete in friendly games or in online leagues (some based on real life fixtures). I am not a fan of the online leagues system as it is quite complicated when your not playing one of your friends as you have to hope they are online. I prefer to play singular friendly games as it can randomly assign you a person who is online. However i sometimes have great difficulty in getting a game.

The game also makes squad updates available for download, usually after a transfer window so you can keep the game up to date.

It also features a very good player creation mode (one of the best iv seen) however i would have liked to have been able to create my own team as well. You can also edit real players here.

Overall the good points of the game are:

            # Player realism - appearance and movement.
            # Licensed teams and kits.
            # Large choice of stadium.
            # Near never ending manager modes.
            # Constant updates.
            # Good player editor\creator.
            # Good Online (when you can get a game).
            # Fantastic crowd noise.

            Bad Points:

            # Commentary is very reptitive at times.
            # Poor crowd appearance.
            # Online mode can be difficult to get a game.
            # Some key stadiums missing. - Also a lack of a default stadium for big clubs without a stadium on the game, E.G. on older games - Square sided stadium or something similar etc. Meaning teams like mine (Aston Villa) play at a foreign stadium nothing like Villa Park.
            # Lack of Holland licensing, this has always confused me as they have players like Van Persie, Kuyt etc all licensed but only for clubs, the whole international team is made of fake player names. - This has always been the case on Fifa and i have never understood this.

Overall however, the greatest football game ever made and one of the best, most addictive games currently available on the Playstation 3.

              Getting better all the time

I have always been a fan of the EA sports annual footy offering but in recent years i felt they were not making the strides forward that they perhaps could have done. However i think FIFA 08 provided reason for hope, it was far from perfection but it was a signal of intent that EA were going to be making crucial changes to keep the fans of this series happy. For years the game has been plagued by annoying scripted play which takes away from skillful play and after a while you can figure out certain things which cause you to win easily. This has not been eliminated but is much improved on previous offerings. Also the introduction of 'be a pro' has been warmly welcomed, where you take control of only on player on the pitch in order to try and have an impact on the game. This is a step in the right direction by EA.

A strong update and a good debut for the PS3 in next gen football

Fifa 08 is a good update to the long running series of football games from EA. The first PS3 title is different to the games that have gone before in that it is not as fast paced and therefore not as simple as previous titles. The game now requires you to create goals more imaginatively and good build up playy is essential in the higher difficulties. The difficulties, ranging from amateur to legendary, provide a platform for all levels to enjoy a good football sim. The game includes licenses for several leagues and teams and with the PS3's online capabilities transfers no longer leave your game out of date, simply download the update and your ready to continue playing. The online play mode is also a success and provides a reasonably lag free match between you and someone lese from around the world. The interactive leagues also add to the gameplay as you look to help your team top the table by replicating real life fixtures online.

Overall I think this game is a worthy update to the series and a good debut for the PS3 and having played both is a better all round game than Pro Evo 08

The bestvirtual football game of its time.

I love football, watching it and playing it on the weekends, but putting a disk into my PlayStation a taking control of my favourite club and players gives me a real buzz! I have always, for my whole life, been a Pro Evolution Soccer fanatic, arguing that although it does not have the license to use the real club names and kit, it had the best game play.
Fifa 2008 for the PlayStation 3 has changed my mind, and showed me a whole new side to virtual football.
The graphics are unrivaled, the gameplay is top-notch and the commentary is legendary. Nothing beats Andy Gray telling stories of how he used to play football, and telling of certain games he played in, whilst you play the computer, just as he does on a Ford Super Sunday on the television.
Gameplay options include making men that are not selected make a decisive run so the active player can pick out the cutting pass, skills with the touch of a button, and different options of shooting depending on the situation you are in.
I love this game, and cannot stop playing it, so I'm sure you will have a mind blowing virtual football experience with Fifa 2008 for the PlayStation 3.

                thumbs up all the way

EA sports have really excelled themselves with FIFA 08. In previous years the have struggled to keep up with konami and there pro evolution soccer series. From the chatasrophic FIFA 2005 to the acceptable 07. The fifa series has been known for there little improvement in recent years, FIFA 08 though breaks the mould with its fresh aproach to virtual soccer. They have seemed to listened to loyals fans who begged for improvement. Countless parts of the game has been improved. The shooting and passing, which most people decided must be improved, satisfactorally has. The players react in real time and the the accuracy of the shot or pass all depends on your position and power on the ball, making the game even more realistic. The off ball control has also been improved with you able to send players on forward runs. The career mode is slot better than before with features that will keep you playing for hours. Online play is obviousley included and has brilliant features such as be a pro mode in which you and foirotjer players can take control of a power each. You can get a bit confused sometimes but the fact that you can control a single player will keep you griped. Overall this is a brilliant game that puts into practice what FIFA fans have always wanted. The only thing that could probably be better is he next installment of this fantastic series.

The best Soccer game to date

This is a really good soccer game. It is more complicated than the other Fifa games but still delivers that great football feeling. The online modes are very fun if you can connect to the internet. Manager mode lets you see what it feels like to sign up for sponsors, allow your team to grow and etc. You can listen to music while you play which is a big plus.
