"Your Gonna Eat Lightening And Crap Thunder" the immortal words of micky from the rocky films rang through my mind as i created my boxer for career mode in EA's epic fight night round 3.
I couldn't wait to hit the ring and throw a few punches as this was my first boxing title i'd invested in since the original "knockout kings" that i loved.
Besides i had an ulterior motive.. I had to get good so i could whip my freinds ass around the ring (what with him being ex uk amateur champ an all).
So i find myself in my first fight after my initial training (during which i was goaded on by my coach who sounded somewhat like the micky charachter mentioned earlier).
Starting out in headgear and padding true to life like a boxer in his first matchup and booyah i got officially leathered by the computer opponent!.
I've never played the other fight night titles so the control system was new to me but i managed to pick it up quickly and before long i was swiftly moving up the rankings.
The 2 player mode is great too and if you have mates around this is a great title to fling on and have a laugh with, winner gets the last beer!.
There is also a "through your eyes mode" which adds a new level of skill to the boxing experience as you have to judge distance etc while being pummeled by a hurricane of oncoming punches that result in you being unable to see your opponent.
The computer AI in this game is actually pretty decent however and every now and then there'll be a match where you shout, swear and throw a hissyfit at the computer whilst accusing it of cheating, so using the same tactics isn't going to cut it in this game, instead you find yourself literally mixing it up in a bid to become the champ.
You win fights and earn money which you spend in the boxing shop on new equipment (some of which is also unlocked by winning) these upgrades are essential in your bid to be the greatest.
The sountrack during the credits is officially bad ass and really gets you in the mood to hit the ring and take on your opponent.
Menu navigation is also simple and the layout is effective, graphically the menus are a bit plain and simple and in the earlier levels you'll find that they look quite plain, where you do actually see this game excel however is when you fight in one of the major stadiums like madison square gardens, the lighting effects shine off your boxer as the sweat gradually builds up and fly's off in all directions when your opponent lands a blow, this looks really nice when playing in high definition.
I've also had the opportunity of playing this game online, unfortunately when i was on it was running a little slow but playstation may have fixed that issue by now (i'll check it sometime soon and update), but overall apart from the odd pause it plays well enough.
My only beef with this game is i completely wrecked my analogue stick whilst playing it as it is easy to get carried away in the throws and blows of the match up, worth forking out for a new controller though. you know damn right it was!.
Add to that when i played him i officially knocked my mate out in the first round and got bragging rights, a worthy investment and overall great game, bring on round 4.
