Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)
Advantages: Graphics and gameplay
I'm sure most of you have heard about the Grand Theft Auto series and I for one love all the games. Most of the games involve you having so much freedom and you roaming around doing pretty much as you please and crashing cars and starting fights.
This particular game starts off with your lead man coming to the US looking for a better life. His cousin quickly gets him involved with the wrong people and his clouded past has him searching for a quieter life that he is not destined to have.
This version is a little different and more advanced than others in the series. For example in this game if you get out and punch an old lady, passers by will jump out of their cars and beat you up.
The graphics are fantastic in this game and probably better than other versions in this series. They work just fine and the animation is good too. Your character's movements are smoother than before.
In this version the mapping system for one is a welcome addition. Now you can set waypoints on the map screen and get a GPS type route to your destination. It really helps out in the beginning when you won't know the streets that well. It's one of my favorite parts of the additions, as sometimes the streets can be tiresome when you just want to get from A to B and get lost in a sea of road.
The gunplay has been reworked, and works pretty well. Now you can use a cover system something like Uncharted. You can hide behind walls or objects, and pop out to fire a few rounds. It makes the shootouts more interesting than just standing out in the open and blazing away. The autotargeting does it's job. You can lock on and blaze away, or make some small adjustments and go for specific placed shots. I don't feel like I'm missing my mouse aiming just yet.
Driving is harder this time around. You'll need to use the brakes to make corners, or you'll send yourself flying through the windshield time after time. I've adapted to new driving style pretty fast. I've read several complaints, but I think they are just wanting to hold the gas down and make every corner perfect. It feels more realistic the way it is. You can't gun the car all day and not wreck. Cops wreck out if they take corners too fast, which is fun to see as well.
Another big feature is the cell phone. You'll receive missions, make dates, get a cab, call the cops or medical, and get text messages from your girlfriends all with your handy cell phone. It's a good use of something that makes sense within the game world. If you don't feel like taking a long drive, you can just call up a cab to do the driving for you. You access the multiplayer parts of the game through your phones menu, as well as enabling cheats if you wish. You can call up characters in the game if you're bored and want to meet them at a bar, for a game of darts.
Overall I think this game was brilliant and a worth addition to the series.
Summary: Overall, great game...go for it
