This was one of the newer next-gen games, and still sells well. With DLC, new stories and new games on the way for this title, it's probably best to read some reviews of this one to get an idea of what happens if you've never played it before, or simply to see if this GTA title is any good or not!
The simple answer to whether it's any good or not is yes. So much yes. However, we can delve a little further into how and why it's a massive yes.
The story itself, is original and is set in the obvious New-York city spin-off; Liberty City. You are Nico Bellic, and have come to America to get away from the old country, in which Nico has fought in the war and experienced some real horrors. You are visiting your cousin Roman, an annoying character, but you love him nonetheless. The game revolves around essentially, making a name for your cousin. You are sent on a variety of missions, for a variety of bosses, making money, playing off your in-debt cousin. As well as eventually revealing the real reason why you're here.
The gameplay is great, the cars handle realistically, a banger is horrific and can't corner or accelerate, and a sports car drives like a dream. The freedom is fantastic, once the whole city is unlocked and available you can literally go anywhere on a massive map. As far as guns go, this was a massive achievement for the latest in the GTA series. You have to remember that this title came out years ago, and provides detailed weapons each with relative damage caused etc. As well as this, walking, running, swimming is all executed really well, and provides excellent depth and added realism to the game.
There are however a couple of negatives. Have you ever played any games in the Yakuza series? If not it's worth a try, they give an interesting take on the classic GTA style of game. In GTA IV there are some morality issues, with choices on who lives/dies and this results in an altered storyline. However, aside from this, the story itself has serious morality issues, are you fighting for good? Or are you just a bitter man with revenge issues? Some gamers won't mind this, but in Yakuza, you help orphans etc you're always made to feel like you're doing illegal things but for the right reasons. It's an interesting point. Some have pointed to GTA's morality grey-area and said it was masterful to allow the gamer to really think about his/her actions. It's a matter of opinion. Another annoying aspect is that the DLC was available on the 360 long before PS3 and the online mode, when compared to COD and other great online games, is poor.
Overall, my opinion is that GTA is a great, playable game that does offer a wide variety of missions; you're not going to be bored! You'll easily get 60+ hours of gameplay out of this really great game. Graphically it's strong, and still is even compared with games coming out now. The romance side provides a break up from the action and couple of laughs, there are 5 datable girls in the game, it's a fun aspect and gives the opportunity to do some of the activities around the game. The pool mini-game is my personal favourite! This game gets 5 stars for just being the full package of a GTA game. The best yet.
Summary: Good value, great game
