Advantages: good character driven storyline, realistic city backdrop, improved gameplay
Disadvantages: some minor issues
I had played the very original and first Grand Theft Auto game on the PC. It had 2d style graphics and a top down view. Back then it was alot of fun just roaming around, generally causing trouble by stealing cars and causing mayhem. The game has come a long way since the original and this version was released in 2008. The story is pretty much still the same but has become a lot more sophisticated.
In GTA IV you play the role of illegal immigrant Niko Bellic as he arrives in Liberty City under the persuasion of his cousin Roman who he hopes will help him pursue the American dream. After arriving though he realises that stories of a life of luxury were far from the truth as he starts to get involved with dealing with loan sharks and other criminals.
The game is very life like in terms of representing a live and active city. You go through the day and you will pass various people on the street as you are carrying out missions or just generally roaming around. Unlike some previous versions of the game you now have a mobile phone to use for communication. It can be used to get jobs/missions, arrange dates and other social outings such as going to bars, bowling and pool. You can also do activities like watching television, listen to radio shows and also surf the internet in internet cafes.
Another feature is the GPS system which helps you to navigate your way around the city and get to where you need to easily. It also shows an indication of your wanted level and the area which you have to get out of to reduce your wanted level from the police. This makes it alot easier to get away from the police. You can also hail and use cabs to get from one place to another for which you will usually have to pay a fare.
The game has a non linear element so you can choose to complete
missions when you want pretty much and free roam around to explore the city. You also will make decisions during missions which will affect things later on in the game.
There is also an online multiplayer mode for up to 15 players at a time which I have yet to explore fully.
Alot has changed in the game since the beginning including improved graphics, more of a storyline, different characters and superior gameplay. This is overall a pretty well polished and solid game from the GTA series and is well recommended. Now available in the platinum series for around £12 which was around the price I paid for it, it is definitely worth a look if you are interested in this sort of thing and don't have the game already.
Summary: good game
