Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga (PS3)
Advantages: Great fun, enjoyable, brilliant idea
Lego Star Wars initially sounded like a joke to me, and there is a certain humour in blowing up storm troopers and seeing seeing them scatter into lego blocks, or building a scout walker from kit parts. However there is much more to the game than that. The Complete Saga version of the game includes all six movies, but also a few extras that weren't in the original games.
The graphics are quite simply Lego brought to life. Characters are simple, easily recognisable Lego people, the world is built of lego blocks and breaks back into it when you smash items, and money is Lego studs. If the graphics are Lego however, the sound is pure Star Wars - from blasters firing to Tie fighters sweeping by.
The controls are simple, very easy to pick up, and even offer an inbuilt choice - you can control movements with the D-pad or joystick for example, since both are always available. The buttons are simple - jump, action, fire and special ability. Of course, what these do depends on who you are playing - "fire" may be Han Solo's blaster or Luke's lightsaber attack, double-tapping jump will make some characters double-jump, while others can't jump at all.
Each movie is split into six levels, preceeding by their own Star-Wars style opening crawl that explains the story and objectives. The levels themselves are nicely designed, and manage to avoid being repetitive. In Story mode, you can only use the characters you are given, usually starting with two and sometimes adding to the group, limiting the abilities available and making it a challenge. You have to complete each level before you can move to the next, but this isn't that hard.
However there is an awful lot more to the game than just the main story. Each level has a range of achievements to complete, including getting sufficient gold, to finding minikit pieces to make models, a timed mode, and a hidden power brick. Each of these unlocks other abilities that you can then purchase or use to reach areas and perform deeds you otherwise could not. The levels have hidden areas not accessible on your first run through. After completing Story Mode you unlock Free Play, where you can pick your own set of characters to play with, and use their abilities to unlock things you couldn't get the first time.
You progress through the levels by jumping, blowing up items and smashing objects, building items from loose blocks you find (or block up items to get), and defeating enemies. All characters have unique abilities, whether it be flight, double jump, using force powers (accurate to the character using them, and you can play Darth Vader), grenades or more. Because these are so varied, Free Play mode success can depend on choosing the right characters, or having unlocked the right ability. Some puzzles will require you to switch between characters on the same level e.g. use Boba Fett to fly to a door and turn into an Imperial Officer to get them to open it.
If you finish all of this, there are bounty hunter missions - playing bounty hunters hured by Jabba the Hutt to kidnap important figures on various levels. This has a challenge all its own as characters who were previously friendly fire on you, you have a fixed group of bounty hunters to use... and it's timed.
It even has two-player co-operative and head-to-head modes to play with a friend.
This is a game that could keep players occupied for months. It's also a lot of fun, very well-designed, and frankly suitable for just about any gamer.
Summary: A well-designed, highly enjoyable game that keeps you busy for hours.
