Anyone familiar with the online game "City of Heroes" will recognise the format that marvel has gone for. This is a 3D platformer giving you access to pretty much every character from the marvel franchise but with one serious advantage.... its the only offline multiplayer beat 'em up on the PS3 at the moment. I was looking for something to play with my friends on a friday night and this definitely fits the bill. Each character has their own special moves that they acquire through the usual XP system which makes for great battles when everyone is on the screen at the same time causing carnage. They've made it extremely easy to switch characters which is great because my friends are regularly jealous of each others special moves.
There isn't much roleplaying or purpose behind the whole game - it's aimed at people that like to imagine 1970s batman style speech bubbles over their character yelling "KERPOW!". You can interact with a lot of the universe, most expensive looking shiny things can be thrown or thrown at.
When the offline multiplayer market for the ps3 has extremely slim pickings (Little big planet or fork out for a whole band) this is a diamond in the rough.
the game i got with my ps3
i wasnt dissapointed with it at all. very much in keeping with the old x men legends games of the ps2.
you play the super heroes of the marvel series who have to join up in unison to sort out those pesky little super villains who had the idea first and have been causing all kinds of havok as of late.
all of your favourite marvel characters will be at your disposal, from the x men to the fantastic four and right down to elektra or black panther.
have fun trying to recruit all the possible heroes and unlock the abilities of those you already have and then run around hacking and slashing at all the stereotypical henchmen that block your path of progress.
while this game contains a lot of fun and excitement at first it soon becomes apparent that its lacking something and you find yourself once again reaching for the t.v. guide before you've halfway completed the game.
its only problem is that it fails to keep interest throughout since it is a bit repetitive so i'd suggest waiting for the price to come down and then buying it one lazy afternoon when you find a bit of loose change in your pocket. otherwise the price ruins the whole thing
