Set in the postapocalyptic world of Metro 2033, and the Moscow subway system, you play Ayrtom, a soldier / member of a sectarian brotherhood who is fighting to control their section of the subway and find the last of the 'dark ones' - special beings with telepathic abilities.
This is essentially a survival horror game with lots of action involved, its actually quite scary and far more jumpy than other survival horrors of late, like Aliens: Colonial Marines and Dead Space 3 which seems to want to focus on shoot em ups more than survival.
It can be a pretty grim game, with a slightly depressing storyline, but it ot unusual if you have seen films like Nightwatch which are distinctly Russian in their feel and look, this game is the same.
This game is pretty long and the external enviroments have been rendered gorgeously. The monsters look a bit simple up close and a bit pixely, but the memory and telepathic history effects are great too, if alittle wierd. There are definately moments in this game where you will be weirded out.
As a first person shooter look you get to use all many of weapons, knives, a simple double barreled shootgun of sorts, and as you progress through the game much more sophisticated weapons more in line with todays special ops weapons.
The look of the characters are very good, even if the Russian accents are a little american and dodgy, but generally the voice acting is very good.
The length of the game is fairly long too, enough for a good 12 hours of gameplay on single player mode.
If I had one critisism its that the game plot can lose you after a while and you get a bit bored with it early on. Plus, the constant toing and throing of going from action phase to walking around/ talking phase around the different areas, gets a little boring after time too.
