I recently reviewed 2k10, and have played this series for years, in my opinion 2k10 is the best of the lot, only just beating 2k7 which was fantastic, this game however, sadly was always flawed.
Okay so the positives, the graphics and basketball presentation and simulation all out strip NBA live 08, no question. This is a great basketball game, and for tis time was the best on the market (though I would say update the rosters yourself and just play 2k7 because its so much better.) The other strength is certain aspects of the gameplay, now every player's shot is starting to look a little more signature, the offense (when you are playing) is great but you will miss a few wide open lay-ups for inexplicable reasons. That's about it for positives, its just like every other 2k game in this respect, solid simulation and realism is all there.
Okay the negatives. This is my issue with this game. The lock down D element with the L2 button, is ridiculous. Shaq can quite happily take Chris Paul and shut him down (this is a great tactic online by the way, using your big men to defend the little guys means turnovers galore). This is a huge issue, and makes a good realistic game become awful.
The next thing is the difficulty level, when I play this game on top difficulty I want to see improved decision making quicker passing, and great defense. However, all I see is Nate Robinson draining 3 after 3, no matter who's on him. This is so frustrating, and makes the more difficult modes impossibly hard, because your shooters just can't do what they do. Huge flaw.
Next, online. This is poor. And by poor I mean terrible, just like every 2k game. They need to sort this out. I can't say more than different gameplay, glitchy graphics and weak connections. Of course now, no - ones on this game so I guess it doesn't make a different.
Okay so my opinion, solid 2k game but majorly flawed. If your on a budget and looking for a game to play, basketball that is, get 2k7 its great. Or push the boat out and get 2k10. 3 stars. After playing this I wanted 2k7 back, and changes for 2k9 and 10. Thankfully they came.
My 1st basketball sim on my PS3 and well it does deliver for what it does. Graphically this is where this game really impresses with fantastic visuals enhanced with my hd tv. This does a lot to enhance the experience and in truth the tv style presentation is pulled of very well. The player models are also impressive with key signature moves being represented from top nba players like Kobe Bryant and Le Bron James.
More importantly however is the gameplay. As I have no other basketball player to compare to I have only my opinion to go by. Game play is certainly impressive representing basketball very well. This has been described as the Pro Evo of basketball games with superior gameplay to any other basketball sim and I must agree with the consensus. It is addictive and will keep you coming back for more.
There are also a wealth of gameplay modes which will keep you going for months. Impressive basketball sim.
A score or a miss?
I would go with a lucky basket on this one.
This game offers basketball as a fun ps3 game, which you can play and enjoy however might not neccasirly want to keep for ever.
The game has a good roster of teams, ranging from the celtics to the spurs and with a slum dunk competition you can peat your skills to the best, as you jump for glory, avoiding obstacles such as cars if you so wish.
The better the dunk, the better you score.
Are you better than Lebron James or Shaq?
The game is fun to play although tackling seems almost impossible in it, and the only way you ever seem to win the ball back is from rebounds or mispalced passes. This lets this game down in a big way.
The graphics are good, but are not amazing, and could be improved however for a basketball fan this game will let you shoot hoops on your ps3 and for a cheap price now on amazon.
