After the first NFL head coach back in 2006, this is a new and improved system. Still there are many flaws to this game that make it unappealing. First off, you must be a football fan to play this game, no question. The intricacies of managing a football team is just too much to handle for someone who has never played football, or watched football. Okay for the pros and cons. This game is very playable. Time flies by when you play this game. There is so much to do from setting rosters, approving trades, getting right into the action of things by play-calling, etc. The visuals are much improved due to being on a PS3. There are just as many problems though. For starters, the supposed "Play-creator" is not as it seems. you cannot truly create whatever play you want. Second off the music is just super annoying. I get it, once in a while some inspiration violins are cool. But track after track is just too much. There is no audible system. There is no, no huddle offense. And there are a lot of bugs. You cannot run the ball like you want to. You have to set sliders to achieve realistic gameplay, which in my mind ruin the game. Anyways in my opinion this game is good but not great. I would advise against buying this game, but await the next version anxiously. Anyways why would you want last year's rosters?!
NFL Head Coach is a game that is available for PS3, Windows and Xbox. It is an American Football version of Championship Manager or Football Manager that you may be more aware of. You are given the choice of which team you want to become head coach of and once your selection is made you're thrown into the world of NFL coaching!
Depending on when you choose to start, you are either landed in before the draft from last season (so you have the chance to re-do the draft and free agency) or just after the draft when your first goals are to get your team ready for the upcoming season. You will be given goals of what your team owner expects to be achieved and successfully meeting these goals will improve your approval rating. Goals range from improving player knowledge of the plays they will be running, trading for particular players or winning certain games against your key rivals. Some of the goals are basically unachievable which can become annoying, especially when you're being told to trade for a player that you don't really need.
The actual games are based on the Madden system. The only difference is that once you pick the plays you have no control over the actions of the players. It is this feature that gets across just how frustrating NFL coaching must be. You'll see a young QB make a throw that is never going to reach its target or a WR dropping balls that should really be caught.
The overall depth of the game will give you plenty of hours of enjoyment though. I was able to get my brand new copy from America for £12 including postage so for that price especially you can't really go wrong when most PS3 games are still at least £20 to buy. If you're a fan of NFL or just management games in general then I think you'll enjoy the challenge provided by NFL Head Coach.
