Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 (PS3)
Advantages: Feels Better, PS3 issues resolved, New Modes
Disadvantages: Not a huge deal of changes
PES 2009, AKA Pro Evolution Soccer 8, AKA ISS Pro Evolution 10, AKA International Superstar Soccer 85. Theres been a million games in this series, point proven.
I've played every game in this long expansive series of football games. I therefore must warn you at this point that I am hugely biased towards PES as opposed to FIFA (why cant anyone like both games anyway?).
On to the game, this is the second PES game released for the PS3, the prior one had some issues, especially with random slowdown and frame rate issues. Luckily this game has no such problems. In terms of changes from the older games, its minimal as usual. Master league, game modes, graphics, sounds are near identical. Theres a couple of new teams that have full licensing such as Liverpool, and the ball physics has been improved slightly.
The biggest addition to this release is the 'Become a Legend' mode, which is basically just Master League only you just control one player. You have to mess about with a handful of training matches before you can get a proper game, then try to attract attention from the big teams by playing well in order to get signed to them and so forth. To be honest I found this fairly tedious and dont really see the point in doing this when you can pretty much do the same only with every player in the team with the normal Master League. This mode also ties in with some online modes, but as I am purely an offline player of PES I cannot comment on these.
A lot of people has said that the Pro Evo series has gone down hill since about Pro Evo 6 (the 2007 release), but I must disagree. With the exception of some dodgy porting issues here and there on different platforms accross the years, I have found that every new release simply feels better to play. I cant put my finger on exactly what it is, as I have said the changes are always subtle, but it means that I can never go back to older versions as they just dont seem right.
Fair enough, if you are not a fan of football or football games this might not be for you, and if you are a casual gamer with a Pro Evo 1 or 2 editions prior to this then you might not really need to spend the money. But if you are like me and you find yourself spinning the PES disc regularly in your machine then I would highly recommend 'Upgrading' to PES 2009.
Summary: Still the best Football game you can buy
