Advantages: Master league better than ever

Disadvantages: Online lags too much

After playing PES 2008 everyday for 6 months at my friends house, PES 2009 became a must buy for the year. However, it seems as if Konami created a game the was many levels below the previous one, which left me diappointed the day I played the game. Konami did do good by purchasing the rights to the champions league which makes the game just a tiny but more special as well as licensing the rights to Manchester United and Liverpool football clubs.

The gameplay has got slower than it was last year, in which you could score 3-6 goals every game, this years PES focused a bit more on defending which can be good at times. The graphics are as good as expected but there are somethings which have made me so frustrated and that is the fact that at some angles the crowd still look cardboard - which you think by now with all this technology would not be a problem to sort out.

What I liked about PES 2009 was the master league which is great fun, you get to choose your team and you play with them in all forms of the game - PL, CL, FA CUP... But you only get to play the champions league when you're promoted in your second or third season. There is another mode called become a legend where you get to choose the looks at some stats of your player. This mode is focused on your player only and allows you to improve his stats, to get him to play at the top level of the game - The Premier League.

The worst part of the game was playing online which was, for me, the most highly anticipated part of the game, but turned out to be a real let down. Playing online was so rubbish as the game lagged so much, that made it impossible to play. Players would be flashing all over the place, red cards would be shown to players for absolutely no reason. The amount of updates required made it impossible to even play anyone online!!

Overall, I would say that playing offline was fun at times - especially if you can play with your friends. Master league remained the best part of the game - as it puts you in full control of the game. I would recommend this over Fifa 09, as the gameplay is much faster in PES 2009.

Summary: Game worth investing in
