Resistance: Fall of Man (PS3)
Advantages: depressing atmosphere, great sound
Disadvantages: bad characters, now bad graphics, some boring missions
One of the first games to be released on the PS3 and the first game i bought for my console. Resistance fall of man is the story of the alien invader, the chrimera, and mans struggle to fight them off. Your charactor Nathan Hale is your typical hardened army skinhead and in the first half an hour of the game is infected with the virus that had already killed half of Europes population but for reasons you will find in the second installment of this game, he is immune.
gameplay: The first game i would complare this games gameplay to is the WW2 call of duty games. On your HUD you have your health bar but that is it so you feel more immersed in the game. Gunfights are regular but do not require much tactical thinking. You can pretty much just run between cover popping off carbine round into the chrimera for the whole game. Its simple but never got old for me at least. Because this is one of the earlier PS3 games your character does react to your controls more like an avatar than a real person. There is little interation with the enviroment but i don't think that can be blamed on poor game design, rather just that the game came out in 2007.
Graphics: When this game first came out i seem to remember being in awe of the graphics but that might just have been the exitement of playing my first ever high defenition game on a much more powerful console. The game nowadays looks very dated and dull. The fact that game is dull though i don't think is a mistake. the story is very depressing and the colours throughout the game reflect that as you travel through a grey and misty Nottingham also adding to your sense of isolation that is present throughout the game.
Story: The story line can be pretty much summed up in the title. The chrimera have wiped out all of Europes armies and are now moving on to Britan. In the start of the game there are many soldiers fighting by your side but as the invasion goes on you find yourself more and more alone. The missions are based around short term objectives and generally just trying to survive in the ruins of England some of them are a little boring but they are mostly fun and engaging. None of the character i found particually interesting, they are all quite samey army types and Nathan Hale is no exception. I think the game was trying to get some emotional response from the player when you see England falling and he is the last hope but i could not empathise with a character a skinhead character who says nothing.
Sound: where there is music it is usually the symphony playing depressed army music over emotional scenes. The sound affects though are brilliant. The rattle of the humans machine guns and the 'pew' of the chrimeras futuristic guns are the backing track whilst men on your side shout and the chrimera roar in pain as they die adding a lot of the atmosphere to a battle.
This game is by no means perfect, in fact if it had come out now i probably would have given it 3 star but for one of PS3's first games its a good effort and none the less a fun game to play through. It is missing a lot compared to modern games but what stuck with me most from the game was the greatly depressing story and enviroments making for a classic in my opinion.
Summary: a game with a lot of flaws but i can overlook them seeing as it is just a great game
