The great soundtrack can't save this games slide down on the snow

Hitting the snow for some snowboarding fun, in 2008 Shaun White Snowboarding offered the chance for gamers to grab a board and hurl themselves down the edge of a mountain. But did this game leave us riding high or just heading down a very slippery slope.

Visuals: Unless your allergic to the colour white, this game really holds a brilliant looking environment. Mountains, cliff faces, log cabins and even ski resort buildings look really fantastic and incredibly realistic. Other than the trees, course markers and buildings everything else is white. I mean this is a snowboarding after all but the snow doesn't look flat like in other snowboarding games. Without sounding too weird, it does have a nice feel when boarding on in this game.

Audio: One of my favourite parts to this game is the cracking soundtrack of songs playing in the background as you are boarding down the mountain. There is a wide range of rock, indie and just generally some brilliant tunes. In a way, they have done what most gamers do when playing sports games, they do not listen to the game but listen to tunes. So instead of people sticking in headphones and listening to iPods, they have created there own great play list for the game soundtrack.

Gameplay: Grab your board and go, literally! If you just want to have some fun and try out some tricks it really is simple to just jump straight in. At the beginning of the game it helps you with all the different button configurations to pull off the different tricks. But don't worry too much about getting confused as it does not chuck in at the deep end and leave you muddled. It starts of off with the basics: jump, grind, grabbing your board. Then once they have been learned, it's only a simple additional button to pull off some great moves! You will fall over a lot but you dust yourself down and your off hurtling down a mountain or grinding again. One of the cool things I like with this game is the fact you can throw snow balls at the other snow boarders. You can even do it in a race to try and put them off.

The customisation is really in depth with being able to choose numerous items of clothing and your board designs, as well as unlocking other items with the money you have earned in game. There are different challenges on each level which range from winning a race, picking up the most trick points and to advance on the story, you have to collect coins that are found on each of the four mountains. Some are hard to reach and leave you working out how to reach them and it does change the game up a little rather than just boarding around aimlessly. But, I just like wondering around not actually doing anything in particular purely down to the nice slick controls and beautiful environment.

In case anyone is wondering, Shaun White is an American snowboarder and skateboarder. With two winter Olympic gold medals and loads of Winter X Games gold medals to his name. He is one of the best snowboarders around and most recognisable with his long red locks. Bit of pointless information, his nickname is the 'flying tomato'.

Conclusion: Visually beautiful, audio brilliant and controls slick and impressive. I really want to love this game but I just could not get into it at all. There wasn't that addictive feeling to play all the time like I have with other games. I would have an hour here and there but it just didn't grab me like I really hoped it would. It is an okay game to play but I don't get that buzz at all. It feels and plays like a game that is nicely polished on the outside but lacks the heart for a gamer. The difficulty of some of the challenges are a little annoying as well, so that does not help. In a way, this game could have been a great game. But to me, the lack of fun and uninteresting story/challenges leave you feeling direction less and a bit pointless playing it. They worked hard on the visuals but didn't put enough graft with the story. It was a disappointment but I'm still glad I bought it as visual affect, sound and the first hour or so of boarding around is quite cool. Games like this annoy me as I really want to like it but I just cannot. There isn't enough to this game and I'm glad I got it for a cheap price a few years back, as it wasn't worth its RRP.

        Disadvantages

Definitely worth giving it a go!

I have always been a big fan of snowboarding games particularly the SSX games on PS2, and this game certainly does not disappoint!

I found that it was a definite 'pick up and play' game. Some tricks are quite hard to master, but with practice they do become relatively simple to do. The graphics are very impressive particularly since the some of the mountains are extremely big. Similarly, the soundtrack does not disappoint and features many good songs, particularly if you're whizzing down a mountain at a ridiculous speed.

It can be quite addictive as well, so if you start playing, make sure you do not have anything else to do for a while as it is quite easy it immerse yourself fully in the game. It certainly has the feel of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater games back in the day with the addictiveness and just general fun gameplay.

I feel that it would have been slightly better if more pro snowboarders were playable, and perhaps if more tutorials were available, particularly if you've never played a snowboarding game before.

This game is ideal for a fan of snowboarding or someone who's looking for a cheap sports game which is not football or wrestling.

        Disadvantages

Buy it if you find it for cheap and your friends have it, otherwise save your hard earned cash

I love snowboarding games. I grew up on coolboarders and then SSX. When I got a PS3 and saw this game I jumped on it but I was in fact a little disappointed. I think that for me the game is almost too realistic. I like the setting, there are just some huge mountains and you pick where you want to go and go any way down the mountain you like. En route there are many different interactive parts of the mountain to amuse yourself with and on the way down you can get involved in different challenges. One of my favorite things is the other riders on the way down that you can throw snowballs at.

The graphics entertained me. There is something enchanting about mountains that just mesmerize me and the whole time in this game there are beautiful backdrops of mountains. For me though the tricks were too hard to do in this game. I want a game where I can push the envelope, where I can do things that would be impossible in real life. I want a game that frees me to break every bone in my body but not feel an ounce of pain. This wasn't that game.

I also found the storyline in this game wasn't up to much, Shaun White sets you challenges and then you go off and try them. The challenges were a pain in the rear, too difficult. Not too hard to do what was required but too hard to do it in a way that the game found acceptable. Without completing every one of these pesky challenges though you cannot progress onto cooler things.

It does have good integration with the PS3. You can play your ps3 playlists through the game so your listening to your own music which is a nice touch. It also utilizes play station network so you can play against your friends or just ride around with them having snowball fight, though I never had any friends with this game to actually try it out on.

        Disadvantages

        Try it

Such an awesome game! It has been getting cheaper and cheaper too, so keep your eyes open for it. In the game, you get to snowboard down several mountains, and complete missions which is great fun.

The thing I like most about this game, is the fact that you can play it over and over again without getting bored with it. The graphics are reasonably good and better than those of similar games. It is fairly easy to control your character, but I found that there wasn't enough explanation on how to do tricks and grabs etc and so I only found out after I played the game a number of times.

Apart from Shaun White, there aren't any other pro's that you talk to and instead, you follow challenges in a competition style. There are several powers that you gain after collecting various coins, which make the game easier as you go along.

The main factor that impresses me is the size of the mountains you can ride down, and how addictive it is. Once you start playing, you won't want to put it down. I would recommend this game to everyone who wants a fun game that you can play over and over again.
